Probably inspired by Lucian's Dialogues of the Courtesans, Alciphron wrote a collection of fictional letters, of which 124 (118 complete and 6 fragmentary) have been published. They are written in the purest Attic dialect and are regarded as models of style. The fictitious authors are Attic fishermen, peasants, parasites and hetaeras. The work thus provides an insight into Greek life of the time and is thus a valuable source for knowledge of Greek private life. His letters were repeatedly based on characters from the comedies of Menandros. The 'fairly accurate translation' (Quérard) into French is by abbé Jérôme Richard. Baudouin was the son of a cobbler and also learned his father's trade. He graduated from the University of Paris and later headed the Collège de Troyes. His Calceus antiquus et mysticus is a treatise on ancient footwear first published in Paris in 1615, then together with De caliga veterum by Giulio Negrone (1553-1625) at Amsterdam in 1667. The present third edition was prepared by Joan Frederik Nilant (1680-1757). A good copy in a Dutch prize binding of the Schola Erasmiana (Rotterdam) with a inscription to Adriaan Oudemans (1715-1789), who was to become a priest and Neo-Latin poet. Seltene Frankfurter Ausgabe. Nach der erstmals 1616-18 erschienenen und 1644 gedruckten Neuauflage ist dies die insgesamt dritte komplette deutsche Ausgabe von Boccalinis politisch-satirischem Meisterwerk De' ragguagli di Parnaso, in dem er die Realität seiner Zeit in einem imaginären, idealisierten Staat widerspiegelt. Ab S. 558 findet sich Boccalinis Pietra del paragone politico. Seine erstmals 1612/13 aufgelegte, gegen den spanischen Absolutismus gerichtete, Essaysammlung in Form allegorischer Erzählungen besteht aus einer Folge von dreihundert 'Nachrichten' - der erstmals 1614 erschienene dritte Teil stammt von Girolamo Briani aus Modena, - von denen der Verfasser behauptet, er habe sie als Korrespondent vom Parnass, vom Hof Apolls, erhalten. Dort berät das Parlament, das aus grossen Männern aller Völker und Zeiten besteht, über moralische, politische und literarische Fragen. Boccalinis Werk übte auch grossen Einfluss auf die zeitgenössische deutsche Literatur aus, so u.a. auf Andreae, Harsdörffer und Schupp (vgl. dazu P. Erste deutsche Ausgabe von Bolingbrokes 'A Voyage to the Demerary' mit den Aufzeichnungen seines langjährigen Aufenthalts im ehemaligen British Guyana. Nachdem Demerary-Essequibo 1798 unter die Kontrolle der Briten geraten war, wanderten viele Briten nach Guyana aus, darunter auch der junge Henry Bolingbroke. Ab 1799 wirkte er als "Deputy Vendue Master, with charge of of public sales and auctions", Ende 1805 kehrte er nach England zurück. Das Buch bietet ethnographisch aufschlussreiche Schilderungen der Arawak-Indianer, beschreibt die Stadt Stabroek und schildert detailliert den Zustand und die Behandlung der schwarzen Sklaven durch die Siedler. - Basierend auf der französischen Fassung dieses Buchs, veröffentliche Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) in der von ihm redigierten Zeitung "Berliner Abendblätter" eine ausführlich Besprechung von Bolingbrokes Buch, mit der Ueberschrift: "Ueber den Zustand der Schwarzen in Amerika". Neusatz mit dem selben Datum (und durchgehend mit Kommas anstelle von Virgeln [Schrägstrichen]) dieser Satire auf die politischen Missstände vor allem Wetzlars, der Stadt des Reichskammergerichts, aus der Feder des in Dittmar bei Tauberbischofsheim in Franken geborenen Franz Callenbach. 1683 legte er am Würzburger Jesuitenkolleg die Magisterprüfung ab. Im selben Jahr trat er in Mainz in den Jesuitenorden ein und zwischen 1690 und 1694 studierte er Theologie in Bamberg. Von 1704 bis 1721 lebter er wieder in Wetzlar, wo von 1705 bis 1710 regelmässig ein von ihm geschriebenes Theaterstück am Schultheater aufgeführt wurde. Die Zahl der verschiedenen Auflagen ist nach Doris Behrens nicht zu bestimmen. Einige der Auflagen dürften von Georg Ernst Winckler, der auch die Periochen (Theater-Programmhefte) gedruckt hatte, in Wetzlar herausgegeben worden sein. Dünnhaupt 957, 6.2; Faber du Faur 1029; vgl. Erster Druck der Erstausgabe. Callenbachs ursprünglich für das Schultheater in Wetzlar verfasste satirische Jesuiten-Komödie, in der die Schein [=Quasi] -Welt und die Fehlentwicklung der staatstragenden Institutionen angeklagt und verurteilt werden. Darin diskutieren zwei Rechtsgelehrte ("Politici"), über die Jurisprudenz. Einer der beiden ist stellenlos, weil er sich zwar in den Gesetzesbüchern, nicht aber in der Kunst der Bestechung auskennt. Written in Greek, the work of Dionysius of Halicarnassus - about half of which has survived - complements Polybius and deals with the earliest history of Rome until shortly before the Punic War. Glareanus edited and annotated the text in the translation of Lapo Birago and dedicated it to King Ferdinand of Austria. On the recommendation of Erasmus of Rotterdam, Glareanus received from the king a gift of 50 Rhenish guilders for his editorial work (cf. Covers with blind and gilt fillets, panel of a gilt fillet interrupted in the middle by buckle-like semicircles, gilt corner pieces, spine on three raised bands, the panels lettered in gilt lengthwise (GALE// NI DE//TEM//PER), all edges gilt and gauffered. Binding slightly rubbed, head cap torn, one corner chafed; minimally foxed in places, tear to gutter margin of title, wormtrack to the lower margin of the last few leaves, endpapers torn off. Some ms. numbers on paste-downs and date 1838.
Rare separate edition of Galen's writings on mixtures and of the Hippocratic Oath in a fine contemporary binding. Galen's typology of the human organism according to mixtures or 'temperaments' of hot, cold, dry and moist was the basis of medical diagnostics at the time. The original Greek text is followed by a second part with Thomas Linacre's Latin translation of Galen's two treatises (first ed. Cambridge 1521) and that of Nicolaus Perottus of the Hippocratic Oath (first separate printing Paris 1514). The book was edited by the Basel professor of theoretical medicine resp. Nach griechischem Vorbild im zweiten Jahrhundert von Aulus Gellius in langen Wintern chten auf dem Lande nahe bei Athen begonnen und daher Noctes Atticae genannt, ist es eine buntgemischte Sammlung von reizvollen Essays aus den verschiedensten Wissensgebieten, wie der Philosophie und Rechtsgelehrsamkeit, Medizin und Geographie, Geschichte und Literatur, ganz besonders aber auch aus der Grammatik. Der besondere Wert liegt darin, dass es manches kostbare St ck aus verlorenen Originalwerken der lteren r mischen Literatur beinhaltet. Ausgabe letzter Hand des grossen Staatsromans, der vor allem in der Tradition von Swifts Gulliver's Travels als Holbergs Spätwerk entstand. Seine Voyage imaginaire von 1741 stiess in den pietistischen Kreisen Kopenhagens auf hasserfüllte Ablehnung, hielt das Buch doch mit scharfer Kritik an der absolutistischen Staatsauffassung von König Christian VI. (1730-46) nicht zurück. Als ironische Pointe schmückte der Verfasser den Roman u.a. mit einer Karte, die nach dem Muster von Swifts Liliput-Karte die genaue Lage des phantastisch-unterirdischen Landes angibt. - Geringfügig gebräunt, von vereinzelten Stockflecken abgesehen, ein sehr gutes Exemplar. Finely printed Cologne edition of the sermons and epistels of Pope Leo I., the Great, edited by the Lübeck born Hagiologist Laurentius Surius (1522-1578). Leo's pontificate, next to that of St. Gregory I, is the most significant and important in Christian antiquity. At a time when the Church was experiencing the greatest obstacles to her progress in consequence of the hastening disintegration of the Western Empire, while the Orient was profoundly agitated over dogmatic controversies, this great pope, with far-seeing sagacity and powerful hand, guided the destiny of the Roman and Universal Church. In several sermons Leo emphatically warned the Christians of Rome to be on their guard against this reprehensible heresy, and repeatedly charged them to give information about its followers, their dwellings, acquaintances, and rendezvous. Of his letters, which are of great importance for church history, 143 have come down to us: we also possess thirty which were sent to him. Leo was buried as the first pope in the church of St. Peter. In 688 Pope Sergius had his remains transferred to the basilica itself, and a special altar erected over them. They rest to-day in St. Peter's, beneath the altar specially dedicated to St. Leo. In 1754 Benedict XIV exalted him to the dignity of Doctor of the Church (doctor ecclesae). - Ms. name, dated 1841 on first fly-leaf; with only few marginalia by an old hand, slightly browned throughout and some minor foxing. - Late 19th century half calf, back on four raised bands, spine gilt with label.
