On ne peut acquerir une veritable culture biblique que si les textes de la Bible se gravent peu a peu dans la memoire. Cela suppose que la Parole soit lue et relue, ecoutee et reecoutee, meditee et celebree. Lecture, priere personnelle ou en groupe, cercle biblique, celebration liturgique, etc.: autant de canaux complementaires par lesquels nous parviennent les mots de Dieu. Le moment etait venu d'offrir au public de langue francaise une "Vulgate francaise": il s'agit de la traduction liturgique de la Bible (en abrege TLB). La version de la Bible reproduite ici est donc celle qui est officielle pour la liturgie de la messe, approuvee par les eveques des pays francophones et confirmee par la Congregation pour le Culte divin (Rome). La plupart des textes figurent deja dans les lectionnaires de la messe, sauf deux mille versets environ, traduits ici par la meme equipe que celle des lectionnaires, afin de realiser une edition integrale du Nouveau Testament. Les auteurs ont voulu presenter cette traduction dans une edition favorisant la lecture et l'etude personnelles ou en groupe, ainsi que la priere. Des sa parution en 1960, le Dictionnaire encyclopedique de la Bible (DEB) s'est revele un outil indispensable au bibliste francophone. L'edition de 1987, profondement remaniee sous la direction du Centre Informatique et Bible (Maredsous, Belgique), a rencontre d'emblee un vif succes. Elle a ete vendue a plus de 15.000 exemplaires et a ete traduite en plusieurs langues. Ce Dictionnaire encyclopedique de la Bible meritait une nouvelle mise a jour pour son 15e anniversaire. La recherche a en effet beaucoup progresse: approches nouvelles, reconsideration d'anciennes theories (notamment sur le Pentateuque), accroissement de la bibliographie. La presente edition revisee et augmentee, realisee avec l'aide des specialistes du domaine, ajoute plusieurs articles nouveaux (analyse narrative; rhetorique; approches canonique, feministe, liberationiste, psychanalytique, statistique, symbolique, theologique ...) et apporte plus de 3.500 titres bibliographiques nouveaux se rapportant a plus de 500 articles differents, et classes dans un ordre chronologique. Rupert von Deutz (ca. 1075-1129), erzogen und ausgebildet im Benediktinerkloster Saint-Laurent in Luttich, wurde nach zeitweiligem Aufenthalt im Kloster St. Michael in Siegburg 1120 zum Abt von St. Heribert in Deutz gegenuber Koln erhoben. Rupert hinterliess ein umfangreiches theologisches Werk. Um 1110/1112 entstand sein liturgisches Fruhwerk "De divinis officiis". Nach weiteren umfangreichen exegetischen Werken wie z.B. "De sancta Trinitate et operibus eius" und "De gloria et honore Filii hominis super Mattheum" verfasste Rupert um 1125 auf Bitten seines Freundes, des Abtes Kuno von Siegburg, einen Kommentar zum Hohenlied. Ruperts Auslegung des "Canticum Canticorum" fugt sich zwar einerseits in die tausendjahrige Geschichte der christlichen Deutung des alttestamentlichen Textes ein, setzt aber andererseits insofern einen neuen Akzent, als er in den Gestalten des Brautigams und der Braut nicht nur Christus und die Kirche sowie Christus und die Einzelseele sieht, sondern das gesamte "Canticum Canticorum" als Gesprach zwischen Christus und Maria versteht und ihm entsprechend den Titel "De incarnatione Domini" gibt, seine Exegese damit also einem einheitlichen Gesichtspunkt unterordnet. Diese marianische Interpretation des Hohenliedes, die die "Menschwerdung des Herrn" in den Mittelpunkt ruckt, wirkte uber das Mittelalter hinaus weit in die Zukunft hinein. Damit wird nach seinem Fruhwerk "De divinis officiis", das bereits in den Fontes Christiani (Bd. 33/1-4) erschienen ist, das zweite Werk Ruperts von Deutz erstmals ins Deutsche ubersetzt. Space has always played a crucial part in defining the place that monks and nuns occupy in the world. Even during the first centuries of the monastic phenomenon, when the possible varieties of monastic practice were nearly infinite, there was a common thread in the need to differentiate the monk from the rest: whatever else they were supposed to be, monks were beings apart, unique, in some sense separate from the mainstream. The physical contours of monastic topographies, natural and constructed, are thus fundamental to an understanding of how early monks went about defining the parameters of their everyday lives, their modes of religious observance, and their interactions with the larger world around them. The group of eminent historians and archaeologists present at the American Academy in Rome in March, 2007 for the conference 'Western monasticism ante litteram. The spaces of early monastic observance,' whose contributions comprise the bulk of this volume, have sought to reconsider the theory, the practice and above all the spaces of early monasticism in the West, in the hope of creating a more complete picture of that seminal period, from the fourth century until the ninth, when notions of what it meant to be a monk were as numerous as they were varied and (often) conflicting.
