The trauma of the First World War had an immensely powerful effect on the painters, sculptors, and printmakers who participated in it. They produced an extraordinary range of striking images that conveyed the immediacy and horror of their experiences and feelings. This arresting book is the first to bring together and examine the full international array of images spawned by the Great War. Richard Cork shows how avant-garde artists from Europe, Russia, and the United States challenged the recruiting posters and other propagandist views of the struggle by producing art that reflected the degradation of the trenches. The conflict was anticipated before hostilities began by the visionary and apocalyptic work of painters such as Meidner and Kandinsky. Chagall, Nevinson, Hartley, Beckmann, Kirchner, and other artists were quick to define war's essential tragedy with objective, expressionist, or allegorical art that alluded to their own wartime experiences. The harshest images of war were made in the latter stages or after the Armistice, when artists such as Dix had time to consider their participation in the war. Ironically, the post-war years also witnessed the redemptive work of Spencer and Brancusi, who after the Armistice produced monumental affirmations of brotherhood, fortitude, and love. This lavishly illustrated book will accompany a major exhibition of art from World War I, to be held at the Altes Museum in Berlin from June 4 to August 28 and at the Barbican Art Gallery in London from September 29 to December 11, 1994.‎

‎Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) fut l'un des plus grands peintres de paysages du XIXe siècle et l'un des chefs de file du mouvement impressionniste. Cette monographie détaillée fournit des informations inédites sur sa vie et son oeuvre. Accompagné de nombreuses reproductions de ses peintures, le texte révèle l'?uvre d'un artiste original à la puissance indéniable. Sisley a consacré toute sa production aux paysages. Ses célèbres peintures des villes de la banlieue parisienne sous la neige, des inondations de la Seine à Port-Marly ou des régates sur la Tamise sont remarquables par l'équilibre des tons et l'atmosphère poétique qui s'en dégage, en même temps que par la description précise des sujets représentés. Le critique Kenneth Clark considère d'ailleurs la série des peintures de la Tamise comme l'un des " moments parfaits de l'impressionnisme ". Pourtant, comme le dit de lui son ami Arsène Alexandre : " Sisley a vécu fier et est mort pauvre. " L'?uvre de Sisley n'a été pleinement reconnue qu'après sa mort prématurée et reste encore de nos jours injustement méconnue. Dans cette monographie, Richard Shone, s'appuyant sur sa connaissance de l'Ile-de-France, apporte un nouveau regard et analyse les différentes phases du travail de Sisley. Ses recherches ont mis à jour certains aspects de la vie de l'artiste : sa nationalité anglaise, le début de sa carrière, son combat pour gagner sa vie, l'isolement des dernières années. La vie privée de Sisley apporte en effet un éclairage particulier sur son évolution artistique. Richement illustré, cet ouvrage présente notamment d'importantes séries de peintures jamais publiées auparavant ensemble en aussi grand nombre-les inondations, les paysages sous la neige, l'église de Moret-sur-Loing et la côte galloise. Cet ouvrage propose l'image d'un peintre qui s'est constamment renouvelé, s'est ouvert aux influences et a offert une vision personnelle de la campagne française, aussi forte et séduisante que celle des autres impressionnistes. Le livre de Richard Shone confirme la justesse du jugement de Pissarro pour qui Sisley était " un grand et magnifique artiste ".‎

‎Zilverwerk was door de eeuwen heen een bron van inspiratie voor heel wat kunstenaars. Religieus zilverwerk heeft het vak tot ongekende hoogten gebracht, maar in de loop van de 20e eeuw werden de opdrachten schaarser. Steeds meer ateliers moesten de deuren sluiten en al snel verdween monumentaal zilverwerk op de achtergrond. Gaandeweg lieten ook de opleidingen te wensen over. Het is de droom van vader Rob en zoon Jaap Thalen om opnieuw het allermooiste te maken: objecten, gebruiksvoorwerpen, kunstobjecten in zilver zoals die al heel lang bijna niet meer te vinden zijn. Monumentale creaties waarvoor zowel het oude vakmanschap als de meest geavanceerde technieken vereist zijn. Hun ontwerpen krijgen vorm in het Belgische Francorchamps en worden wereldwijd naar waarde geschat.‎

‎When St James the Great was beheaded in Jerusalem in AD 61, he became the first apostle to be martyred for his faith. According to legend, his disciples brought the body in a miraculous stone boat to north-western Spain, where they buried it in a place now known as Santiago de Compostela. Following a claim in the early ninth century that the tomb had been rediscovered, people began flocking to the site to venerate the relics. Santiago became, after Rome and Jerusalem, the most important place of pilgrimage in medieval Christendom. Pilgrims from all over Europe broke away from their daily routine and set off along the 'Way of St James' through France and Spain to the remote town of Santiago. They travelled from hostel to hostel, visiting the churches and other holy places which lay on the route. Over the centuries a 'cultural highway' evolved, which has left an indelible mark on the artistic, religious and social map of Europe. In 1984, Brian Tate, Emeritus Professor of Spanish at the University of Nottingham, retraced the ancient journey of the pilgrims, accompanied by his son Marcus and the photographer Pablo Keller. The result is a remarkable visual record of some of the most beautiful landscapes in southern Europe and architectural treasures dating from the Romanesque to the present day.
