‎ In deze bundel wordt een vrij representatief overzicht geboden van strekkingen binnen het onderzoek van de kunst der Nederlanden uit de 15de tot de 17de eeuw, met nadruk op Vlaanderen. Zowel stilistische als iconografische benaderingen zijn vertegenwoordigd en er wordt ook aandacht besteed aan de invloed van deze kunst in het buitenland. In een eerste afdeling staat de figuur van de gehuldigde, Carl Van de Velde, centraal. Verschillende aspecten van zijn wetenschappelijke, organisatorische en pedagogische persoonlijkheid worden belicht. Een volledige bibliografie van zijn publicaties biedt een overzicht van de verscheidene onderzoeksdomeinen die hij exploreerde. De wetenschappelijke bijdragen die volgen, werden chronologisch gerangschikt. Eerst komt de vijftiende-eeuwse Vlaamse schilderkunst aan bod met bijdragen over Van Eyck, Bouts en Hugo van der Goes. Vervolgens wordt aandacht besteed aan teken- en prentkunst (Lucas van Leyden, Cornelis van Oostsanen, Lambert Lombard) uit de vroege 16de eeuw. De broers Floris krijgen -als specialiteit van de gehuldigde ?bijzondere aandacht. Het belang van de twee kunstenaars wordt aangetoond in artikelen over hun atelierwerking, de iconografische thema' s in hun werk en de bredere impact van hun oeuvre. Verder worden artistieke wisselwerkingen tussen zestiende-eeuwse schilders besproken in bijdragen over Peeter Battenen Gillis Mostaert. De 16de eeuw wordt afgesloten met een studie over het altaar van het schildersgild in Antwerpen en een bespreking van enkele ideeen van Karel van Mander betreffende de inventie. In een laatste afdeling wordt dieper ingegaan op de 17de eeuw. Een iconografisch thema in de Hollandse kunst wordt uitgediept en de activiteitvan een Luikse beeldhouwer aan het Franse hof wordt getraceerd, maar het accent ligt toch op de Zuidnederlandse kunst. Hier wordt vooral het werk van Rubens uit verscheidene invalshoeken benaderd, maar ook tijdgenoten worden voor het voetlicht gehaald. De bundel biedt een gevarieerd overzicht van de rijke geschiedenis van drie eeuwen kunst der Nederlanden.‎

‎Theodoor van Loon (ca. 1582-1649) is minder bekend dan Rubens, maar was in de zeventiende eeuw beslist een van de meest originele schilders van de Zuidelijke Nederlanden.
