1559 was het oprichtingsjaar van het bisdom Antwerpen. 450 jaar geleden werd de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk omgedoopt tot de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal. Een verjaardag om te vieren met een prestigieuze tentoonstelling! In haar 450-jarig bestaan groeide de Kathedraal uit tot een ware schatkamer van religieuze kunst, geschilderd en gebeeldhouwd door gereputeerde meesters. Ze sierden de zuilen, kapellen en wanden van de Kathedraal tot aan de Franse Revolutie. In de nasleep van deze omwenteling vonden heel wat altaarstukken onderdak in musea. Het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen was er een van. De hechte samenwerking met het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen maakt het mogelijk om acht van de mooiste altaarstukken uit de museumcollectie terug te brengen naar de Kathedraal. Naast deze werken stelt ook de Kathedraal er acht uit haar vaste collectie tentoon. Het gaat hier over veelal imposante werken, hoofdzakelijk triptieken van vaak wel 5m breed en 3m hoog die in het huidige kathedraalinterieur geintegreerd zullen worden. Deze unieke in situ' hereniging geeft de bezoeker een spectaculair overzicht van meesterwerken uit de Gouden Eeuw van de Antwerpse schilderschool.De curatoren, dr. Ria Fabri en dr. Nico Van Hout, geven aan de hand van de tentoongestelde altaarstukken een kijk op het toenmalige mecenaat door ambachten, gilden en broederschappen.Ze laten de bezoeker toe de verwevenheid van maatschappij, geloof, kunst en cultuur in de 16de en 17de eeuw te herontdekken en werpen een licht op de iconografische en socio-economische ontwikkelingen doorheen de eeuwen.

The most important Flemish painter of the 17th century, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), was already considered one of the most learned representatives of his guild during his lifetime, as he was likely to have dealt with theoretical questions of his art. So far, only sparse written evidence of often questionable authenticity has been used as evidence. For the first time, the work systematically puts a series of previously inadequately interpreted handwritten main mythological works in a common context and analyzes them in detail against the background of the theory of the 16th and 17th centuries, which was mostly associated with Italian art. The author succeeds in showing that the relatively "new" genre of mythological histories in the Netherlands around 1600 gave the painter extensive freedom in terms of form and content to construct novel and unusual pictorial statements. The paintings examined testify to Rubens' differentiated and comprehensive theoretical reflection on the power and possibilities of his art in the medium he is most familiar with, painting itself.
