‎This publication examines Ruben?s Passion of Christ as a transformation of diverse influences, and as a tribute to his deeply held religious beliefs and his determination to give his viewers the sense of witnessing a moment in history. Rubens was well placed to take advantage of the increasing demand for scenes of Christ's Passion in the Southern Netherlands at the beginning of the 17th Century. He had developed a reputation for his religious paintings in Italy, and his return to Antwerp coincided with the efforts of the Catholic Church to restore and replace altarpieces damaged by the Calvinists. The experience of Italy fostered Ruben?s interest in both the historical and the human aspects of Christ?s Passion. ‎Nouvelle édition pour les Saturnalium (première édition en 1582, le privilège étant cependant de 1598 pour certainement la première illustrée) et édition originale pour le second ouvrage de Phillipe Ruben, Electorum. Marques de l'imprimeur en page de titre et au dernier feuillet libre. Jan Moret était le gendre de Plantin, il reprit l'imprimerie après le décès de ce dernier. Illustration : Saturnalium est illustré de 4 planches en double page, 4 planches simples avec 2 figures et 4 figures in-texte ; l'ensemble ne contient aucune signature, mais serait de la main de Van der Borcht l'aîné, lequel travaillait régulièrement avec jan Moret. Electorum contient 3 planches en double page et 2 figures in texte, l'ensemble par Cornelius Galle (certaines planches étant signées). Il manque une gravure sur double page. Reliure en plein parchemin d'époque. Dos lisse janséniste. Pièce de titre de parchemin beige. Un manque en tête et un en queue. Salissures sur les plats. Premier cahier détaché. La pièce de titre indique To. VII, ce volume faisait certainement partie d'un ensemble de textes de Juste Lipse ou autour de cet auteur. Bel exemplaire. Les Saturnales étaient de grandes fêtes romaines durant le solstice d'hiver (17 au 24 décembre, puis 25) ; les célébrations du Dieu Saturne étaient accompagnées de grande fêtes populaires débridées, mais aussi de spectacles, notamment de gladiateurs. Les barrières sociales étaient abrogées et les esclaves étaient servis par les maîtres. Juste Lipse rassemble tous les commentaires qui ont été écrits sur le sujet et les étudie. Une grande partie est consacrée aux spectacles différents donnés par les gladiateurs. Electorum est un florilège, un choix de ce qui se trouve de meilleur parmi les auteurs de l'Antiquité sur les rites antiques.
