BLEULER, Johann Heinrich. (the Younger: 1758 Zürich - 1823 Feuerthalen bei Schaffhausen):
Reference : 86448aaf
First printing of the paper in which Blondel describes his invention of the electromagnetic oscillograph, a device that allowed electrical researchers to observe the intensity of alternating currents. The bifilar and soft iron oscillographs won the grand prize at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904. They were more powerful than the classical stroboscope, invented in 1891 then in use. They remained the best way to record high-speed electrical phenomena for more than 40 years when they were replaced by the cathode ray oscilloscope. They paved the way for a greater understanding of the behavior of alternating current.

Hagiographers and sermonists came together in 1995 to focus on the sermon, the central literary genre in the life of medieval Christians and Jews and the primary medium for conveying and adapting models of holiness to the public. the contribution in this volume elaborate the sermon's role in constructing and diffusing models of holiness in different cultural and chronological categories, from ninth-century Ireland to late medieval Germany, from the synagogues of medieval Spain to the piazzas of fifteenth-century Florence, and from the secret meetings of heretics to the papal court in Avignon. While ideals of holiness remained relatively consistent, the practical interpretations varied widely. Among the topics explored are the swift construction and propagation of Becket's cult after his martyrdom; The reappearance of certain biblical figures in different milieux; the non-utilization of non-biblical models; the interpretation of models for lay listeners and female audiences: chronological shifts in the vocabulary of sanctity; the theological basis for encouraging lay preaching; and attitudes in the eve of the Reformation. Methodological concerns are also elucidated here: the challenge in methodology shared by scholars of Jewish and Christian preaching; the sources other than sermons that bear on preaching; compilers' modifications to their sources; the role sermons played in canonization processes; expanding the definition of a sermon to encopass the activities of lay movements, laywyers, monarchs, and contexts beyond the framework of traditional worship.

This volume contains tranlations of four lively and eventful lives recorded by the Dominican hagiographer Thomas of Cantimpre (c. 1200-c. 1270). The Dominican Thomas of Cantimpre (c. 1200-c. 1270) was a key figure in the 'evangelical awakening' of the thirteenth century. A prolific hagiographer, he lauded such diverse subjects as the abbot and apostolic preacher John of Cantimpre; the teenage saint Margaret of Ypres, an urban recluse who died at 21; Lutgard of Aywieres, a Cistercian nun and mystic; and the theatrical, mentally troubled Christina 'the Astonishing' of St-Trond. Thomas had few peers in portraying the ritual theatre of penance. He gives us such memorable scenes as a naked moneylender led out of a pit by a rope, a formerly rapacious prince kissing his peasants? feet as he restores their stolen goods, St Christina leaping into fires and boiling cauldrons to save souls in purgatory, and the deceased Pope Innocent III in agony, begging St Lutgard for her prayers. In this volume readers will find all four lively and eventful lives between the same covers for the first time. The Life of Abbot John of Cantimpre has been newly translated by Barbara Newman, who has also supplied a new introduction. The other three Lives are reprinted from Margot H. King's Peregrina Translations Series. Languages : English, Latin.

During the seventeenth century Dutch influence on the Baltic region, both economic and aesthetic, was unrivaled. In the wake of the Dutch monopoly on Baltic trade, cultural contacts between the Dutch Republic and the Baltic world flourished. The Dutch Republic was even to fulfil an exemplary function in the Baltic world (particularly in the Swedish Empire, the dominating power in the region), not solely limited to the commerce of commodities but extending to the domain of architecture and art as well. In this intensive cultural traffic, an important role was set aside for Dutch immigrants, architects, artists, and their agents. Apart from their regular activities as diplomats or news correspondents, agents mediated in cultural affairs for patrons in the North. As such, they occupied a key role in the relations between the Baltic world and the Dutch Republic. The pivotal element in these networks, they negotiated between Baltic commissioners and Dutch architects, artists, and suppliers of luxury items, including sculptures, tapestries, paintings, as well as a wide range of books and prints - all of which were available on the Amsterdam market. These extensive networks mark the Dutch Republic as a major centre of architecture, art, and information, crucial to the cultural development of northern Europe. The history of this lively trade in good taste is told on the basis of rich archival material, including drawings, book and art collection inventories, correspondence, travel journals, and diaries. New.
