‎Dat zo'n keur aan Vlaamse meesters in een collectie zit, is op zich al bijzonder. Dat die collectie op reis gaat, mag nog uitzonderlijker heten. De indrukwekkende Vlaamse afdeling van de Royal Collection verliet nog nooit eerder bijna in zijn geheel de Britse eilanden. De selectie van een vijftigtal schilderijen biedt een uitgelezen kans om het gezamenlijke topniveau van de kunstenaars van de lage landen in te schatten. De schilderijen werden tussen de 15de en de 17de eeuw gemaakt, in aanvankelijk voorspoedige maar, na de opstand tegen de Spanjaarden, ook woelige tijden. Tegen 1550 was Vlaanderen een van de rijkste streken ter wereld. Antwerpen zoog als het wereldcentrum van welvaart kunstenaars en verzamelaars, intellectuelen en burgers naar zich toe. De schilders haalden the rich and the famous voor hun ezel, en die betaalden graag voor de luisterrijke Vlaamse portretten vol realistische details. De meesters vonden de oude verhalen van bijbel en mythe telkens opnieuw uit, en de katholieke kerk zette de schilderijen graag in bij de contrareformatie. Ook in het landschapsgenre werden ze wereldvermaard. De Tachtigjarige Oorlog (1568-1648) maakte aan de voorspoed van deze streken een einde, maar de schilders weken uit en bleven meesterwerk na meesterwerk maken. Nieuw boek.‎

‎Summary Cyril of Alexandria's scriptural exegesis is markedly trinitarian in scope and christological in focus throughout his writings. This book explores Cyril's christological exegesis predominantly in his Dialogues on the Trinity. Early Christian reading culture consists of more than simply how one reads, but also considers who reads and to what end. Accordingly, Cyril envisions that an ideal reader undertakes trinitarian and christological exegesis with certain Nicene commitments. Whereas partitive exegesis is generally understood as a reading strategy whereby interpreters identify some texts as speaking of the Son qua divine and others as speaking of the Son qua human, Cyril offers two closely related christological reading strategies in the Dialogues: 1. epochal exegesis, and 2. partitive exegesis. For Cyril, these methods of reading do not speak of there being two Sons, nor do they intend to divide the ineffable union of the two natures within the single incarnate Word. Cyril's christological exegesis 1. identifies any given text as speaking about the Son in one of the three stages of the economy (i.e., epochal exegesis), and 2. subsequently identifies whether texts speak about the Son qua divine Word, or the Son qua incarnate Word during His oikonomia with the flesh (i.e., partitive exegesis). His microscope is still of great importence in colloid studies, but in most fields where great magnification is required, it has been outdistanced by the electron microscope.""Zsigmondy was a figure of paramount importance on colloid chemistry during the first quarter of the twentieth century. His receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1925, for invention of the ultramicroscope and his work on colloids was the first time this fledgling science had been so honored. In 1926 work by J. B. Perrin and Theodor Svedberg that followed directly from Zsigmondy’s achievement was recognized by the Nobel Prizes in physics and in chemistry, respectively. ‎This book discusses the impact of various social networks on Scandinavian society from a longue duree perspective, from the Viking Age to the nineteenth century. Friendship, patron-client relationships, and social networks played a fundamental role in Scandinavian society from the Viking Age through to the Industrial Era. Personal ties were essential to Viking chieftains for building their power base, and such ties were equally crucial for early modern merchants, who used their personal bonds to create trade networks. Furthermore, social networks connected medieval men and women to the saints and to God. The articles in this book emphasize the strong correlation between political developments such as the emergence of the state and the evolution of friendships and social networks. They also highlight radical changes in the importance and contexts of friendship that occurred between the Viking Age and the late eighteenth century. During this period, friendships became far more than community-based social relationships, but rather tools for the elite in social positioning and wealth acquisition.
