In these two memoirs Venel attempted to prove that effervescent mineral waters contain a quantity of common air in solution, thus seperating carbon dioxyde (he called it air surabondante) without knowing what it really was, thus beeing ""so close to making a discovery without actually making it..."" (Fourcroy). ""In 1750 Venel described his analysis of the effervescent mineral water of Selz, in Germany. Evaporation yielded only common salt and a little lime, and he was more interested in the effervescence, which was, he thought, caused by the escape of common air. All water contained a small amount of dissolved air, but Selzer and other effervescent waters contained superabundant air, as Venel called it. He made artificial Selzer water by adding the correct amounts of marine (hydrochloric) acid and soda to pure water, and he called the product aerated water, a term that is still in use. Stephen Hales had thought that effervescent mineral waters contained “sulphurous spirit"""" Venel’s experiments proved the absence of the gas now called sulfur dioxide, but he failed to notice that the ""superabundant air"" differed in any way from common air. It was, of course, carbon dioxide, characterized in 1754 by Joseph Black, who called it fixed air. Fourcroy later commented that no one had ever been so close to making a discovery without actually making it as was Venel.""(DSB).

Avec un bel envoi autographe à ses parents daté du 9 mai 1945, par le rédacteur et éditorialiste de la revue : Alan Rowland Chisholm (professeur de français et animateur de "L'Ecole de Melbourne" ; il était critique et mémorialiste, spécialiste de la poésie française, Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Valéry...). Outre des articles sur la littérature française : Gides, Anatole France, Romain Rolland, Aragon, Colette... on trouve dans cet opuscule des essais sur les arts, la philosophie, la situation de Paris dans la guerre.. et surtout la première publication australienne de la traduction anglaise du "Silence de la mer". Elle occupe les pages 26 à 39, et comme l'indique une note à la fin, a été établie d'après le texte anglais paru dans le magazine "Life" du 13 octobre 1943 à New-York (page 102). On y retrouve les mêmes coupures des pages 51 à 54, 61, et 64 à 66 de l'édition française de 1942 ou 43.

Summary Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604 contains a unique prose legendary almost entirely of female saints, all of whom are virgins, martyrs, or nuns. The manuscript, which also has varied post-medieval items, is written in one hand probably dating from c. 1480 to c. 1510. This previously unstudied Middle English collection features twenty-two universal and native saints, both common (like John the Baptist and thelthryth) and rare (such as Wihtburh and Domitilla). These texts are dependent on a complex mixture of Latin sources and analogues. Specific linguistic and art-historical features, as well as attention to the predominant female saints of Ely and post-medieval provenance, suggest an East Anglian convent for the original readership. Through an exploration of the manuscript and its later ownership (both recusant and antiquarian), a discussion of its linguistic attributes, a consideration of local female monastic and book history, a comparison of hagiographical texts, and a wide-ranging source and analogue study, this Study fully contextualises these Middle English lives. The book concludes with a survey of the structural and stylistic aspects of the texts, followed by three appendices, and an extensive bibliography. Summary Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604 contains a unique collection of prose saints' lives evenly divided into eleven universal and eleven native saints (predominantly culted at Ely). Clearly intended for the devotional life of nuns, presumably in an East Anglian convent, the volume comprises nineteen female figures, all of whom are virgins, martyrs, or nuns, and three male saints (two apostles and a hermit). These late Middle English lives are translated from a variety of Latin sources and analogues including material by Jacobus de Voragine, John of Tynemouth, and others. The collection demonstrates an interest in showcasing native saints alongside their universal sisters. Luminaries of the English Church, such as thelthryth of Ely and her sister Seaxburh, are found in the company of notable virgin martyrs like Agatha and Cecilia. Famous saints like John the Evangelist and Hild of Whitby feature alongside others such as Columba of Sens and Eorcengota. Fully analysed and contextualised in its companion volume Saints' Lives for Medieval English Nuns, I: A Study of the ?Lyves and Dethes' in Cambridge University Library, MS Additional 2604, these texts are edited here for the first time. This book is the first volume of a projected 3-volume edition which aims to contribute to our understanding of Robert Persons's significance as a controversial figure in early modern European history. It includes documents and letters by Persons, as well as letters to Persons, notably from the superior general of the Society of Jesus, Claudio Acquaviva. Letters in Latin, Italian and Spanish are presented in original language and spelling, with English translation, and letters in English in original spelling. All letters have been collated with the extant manuscript witnesses. The introduction comprises Persons's biography, relevant aspects of early Jesuit history and the Jesuit mission to England, and overviews of the papacy and the political situation in England and Scotland, France, the Netherlands and Spain, for the period covered by the letters in this volume.
