‎Political Thought in Early Fourteenth-Century England. Treatises by Walter of Milemete, William of Pagula, and William of Ockham,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2003 Hardback, XIV+209 p., 150 x 230 mm. ISBN 9782503514390.‎

‎The early fourteenth century was an explosive period in English history that produced international intrigue and a number of important treatises on political thought. This volume offers for the first time in English translation several important commentaries on the political scene in early fourteenth-century England: Walter de Milimete's On the Nobility, Wisdom, and Prudence of the King (1327), the two versions of William of Pagula's Mirror of King Edward III (1331 and 1332), and William of Ockham's Whether the Ruler Can Accept Church Property for his Own Needs, namely, in the Case of War, even against the Wishes of the Pope (1338). All of these treatises offer important insight into such matters as the extent of the king's power in the fourteenth century and earlier, the relationship between Church and State, and the particular duties of the ruler towards various of his subjects. ‎First appearance of this extremely importent paper in which Clairaut directly confirms the rotation and the orbital movement of the Earth around the Sun, and giving an indirect proof of the axiom, that the velocity of light does not depend on whether the light source moves away or toward the observer. The Earth does move after all !!In 1728 James Bradley, trying to measure the stellar parallax, discovered stellar aberration - the angular displacement of the apparent direction of starlight due to the earth's motion - and attributed it to the combined effect of the finite velocity of light and the earth's orbital velocity. But Bradley had not given any theoretical proof, but Clairaut did in the offered paper.Aberration is ""the apparent change in direction of a source of light caused by an observers component of motion perpendicular to the impinging rays. During this time the telescope has moved a short distance, causing the photons to reach a spot on the focal plane, displayed from the former image position... This discovery provided the first direct physical confirmation of the Copernican theory. A second importent application of aberration has been its clear-cut demonstration that, as is axiomatic to special relativity, light reaching the earth has a velocity unaffected by the relative motion of the source toward or away from earth.""(McGraw-Hill ""Concise Encyclopedia..."").‎

‎Expo: 17/6/2016 - 16/12/2016, Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerpen. 450 years ago, anecdotes that we would now relate via social media were shared in churches, then the most important places for meeting up with others. In 2016, Museum Mayer van den Bergh is presenting for the first time a selection of church interiors that speak to us about daily life in that period. As well as being places of liturgy, churches were where people celebrated, grieved, paraded, begged, gossiped and even played. Everyday life played out within. And this can be seen in paintings on the subject made in such great quantity in Antwerp in the 16th and 17th centuries. These church interiors are not only masterpieces of perspective, but also present fascinating scenes of existing or lost churches replete with splendid indoor vistas, every corner revealing to us daily life. Museum Mayer van den Bergh is bringing together a number of these church interiors for the first time. This beautifully illustrated catalogue introduces the reader to locations that were the places to meet in the 16th and 17th centuries. ‎

‎MADE IN FLANDERS. THE MASTER OF THE GHENT PRIVILEGES AND MANUSCRIPT PAINTING IN THE SOUTHERN NETHERLANDS IN THE TIME OF PHILIP THE GOOD,‎

‎, Turnhout, Brepols, 2000, Bound, black cloth, illustrated dustjacket, 205 x 305mm., 499pp., profoundly illustrated in colour and b/w. ISBN 9782503508788.‎

‎The subject of this monograph is the prolific mid-fifteenth-century Flemish book illuminator whom Friedrich Winkler first identified and named in 1915 after a richly decorated copy of the statutes and privileges of Ghent and Flanders made for Philip the Good, duke of Burgungy (Vienna, Ost. National-bibl., Cod.2583). While no fewer than 15 codices and cuttings have been ascribed to the painter in the 80 years since Winkler's pioneering essay, there has been no published effort to date to order, analyze, and evaluate the work of the Ghent Privileges Master in the larger context of the history and arts of the Burgundian Netherlands. The monograph's essay is divided into five chapters. The first caracterizes the style of the Vienna Privileges itself and then carefully trace its origins and development. Compositional and iconographic sources, innovations, and problems are identified and analyzed in the second chapter; ancillary decoration -especially decorated initials and floral borders- are described and localized and collaborating miniaturists identified in the third. In the fourth chapter the stylistic evidence obtained in the first three chapters is joint together with that provided by texts and provenances in order to date and localize the subject books and leaves. The final chapter positions those codices and cuttings in the larger context of Flemish illumination in the time of Philip the Good. Following the essay are 334 figures and 141 comparative illustrations and a catalogue raisonne of 30 books and 24 leaves in the Privileges style. A decisive majority of the figures and illustrations have never before been reproduced in the scholarly literature; the physical characteristics, texts, miniatures, provenance, and bibliography of each codex and cutting are described in full detail in the catalogue. Following the latter are appendices that provide the readings and textual authorities for the Hours of the Virgin. Book is in very good condition.‎

‎Summary This volume presents the first full edition and study of the four glossaries preserved in Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 730. The glossaries offer evidence of the continuity of the Old English glossarial tradition well into the Middle English period; with Latin (and sometimes Greek) entries followed by Latin, Anglo-Norman, and English glosses, they bear witness to the multilingual environment of late-twelfth and early thirteenth-century England. An introduction sets the glossaries in the history of medieval English lexicography, and textual apparatus and notes provide interpretations, parallels, and commentary on each entry. The entire volume offered. Fine and clean.‎

‎First printing of this main paper in the working out of the Kinetic Theory of Gases in which Clausius announced his determination of the equation governing the mean free path lenght of a molecule moving freely in gases. By this he inscribed his name as one of the founders of the Kinetic Theory of Gases.""Clausius was one of the founders of the kinetic theory of gases and of the science of thermodynamics. He and Lord Kelvin at about the same time and independently announced the Second Law of thermodynamics. Clausius particularly developed the theory of thermodynamics by applying it to the study of gases and vapors.""(Magie in ""A Source Book in Physics"", p. 228).""In order to analyze the process (of molecular collisions), Clausius adopted a simplified model for his admittedly complicated molecule. He assumed that whatever the actual patterns on intermolecular forces, one could suppose that there is some advantage distance between the centers of molecules which would represent a general boundary between attractive and repulsive forces. If two molecules were to approach each other within that boundary, repulsion would generally occur. Thus the very complex problem of intermolecular action was reduced to a ""billiard ball"" model."" ‎First appearance of the paper in which Clausius makes importent contributions to the generalization and understanding of the Second Law of Thermodynamics by introducing the concept of disgregation and proving the equivalence of the transformation of heat.""Clausius began that search for understanding in 1862 by introducing the concept of disgregation, a concept that, he said, was based on an idea he had long held: that the force of heat for performing mechanical work (both internal and external together) was proportional to the absolute temperature.13 Clausius had never stated this idea explicitly before, although he had argued in 1853, by adopting an analogy between a reversible steam engine and a thermocouple, that the potential difference at a thermocouple junction should be proportional to the absolute temperature. In any event, he now wished to assert that the work which can be done by heat in any change of the arrangement of a body is proportional to the absolute temperature multiplied by a function of molecular arrangement, the disgregation Z. Given this assumption and his postulate that the heat in a body H was only a function of temperature, he was able (1) to prove his theorem of the equivalence of transformations and (2) to separate the equivalence function (entropy) into a temperature-dependent term and a configurational-dependent term...""(DSB).The issue contains other notable papers, Plücker ""Ueber recurrente Ströme und ihre Anwendung zur Darstellung von Gasspectra"", pp. 27-54, Tyndall ""Ueber Strahlung und Absorption der Wärme durch gasförmige Materie"", pp. 1-27.‎

‎First printing of the 3 main papers in the famous Helmholtz-Clausius controversy about the principle of the ""Conservation of Energy"". His reply to Clausius contains very importent additons to his conservation law, as it clarifies his use of the concepts of ""energy"", ""vis viva"", ""electrical tension"" , ""potentials"" etc.Helmholtz famous work Über die Erhaltung der Kraft"" from 1847 gave the first comprehensive statement of the first law of thermodynamics: All modes of energy, heat, light, electricity, and all chemical phenomena, are capable of transformation from one to the other but are indestructible and cannot be created. Clausius (in the papers offere) critized helmholtz on his theory of heat over the consistency of the physical interpretation and of the use mathematics. He argued that Helmholtz's demonstration of his conservation law was valid only for Helmholtz's particulat model of matter, and that he had not understood the notion of the potential. This criticism lead Helmholtz expand and clarify the central concepts of physics, importent steps in the history of theoretical physics.‎
