Summary This volume fills an important gap in the study of medieval English sanctity. Focused on the period 1150-1550, it examines later manifestations of pre-conquest northern English cults (John of Beverley, Oswald, Hilda, theldreda etc.), and the establishment and development of many more during the twelfth to fifteenth centuries (Godric of Finchale, Robert of Knaresborough, Oswine of Tynemouth, bbe of Coldingham, Bega of Copeland, William of York, etc.). It showcases the diversity of new northern cults that emerged after 1150, and pays particular attention to cultures of episcopal and eremitic devotion and hagiographic production in Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lincolnshire. Divided into five subsections, the volume opens by exploring the relation of sanctity to constructions of northern identity through targeted examinations of northern textual and material cultures. It then turns to a series of case studies of northern saints' cults, grouped with reference to the eremitic life, female networks and locations, and the contextualisation of northern sanctity within national, transnational and post-medieval currents of veneration. Underlying all these essays is a concern with the conflicted idea of 'northernness'. This collection argues for a northern sanctity that is imagined in varying ways by different communities (monastic, diocesan, national etc.), allied to a series of conceptual 'norths' that differ significantly in accordance with the bodies of evidence under survey. First appearance of the paper in which Christie describes his invention of the electrical circuit meant to measure an unknown electrical resistance by balancing two legs of a bridge circuit, one leg of which includes the unknown component. It was later (1843) improved and popularized by Charles Wheatstone, and then baptized ""Wheatsone's Bridge"". Wheatstone called the circuit a ""Differential Resistance Measurer."" ""Christie’s paper ""Experimental Determination of the Laws of Magneto-electric Induction"" was the Bakerian lecture for 1833. In it Christie showed that ""the conducting power, varies as the squares of [the wires’] diameters directly, and as their lengths inversely."" He also concluded that voltaelectricity, thermoelectricity, and magnetoelectricity are all conducted according to the same law, which lent further support to the theory that all these electricities are identical. In this paper (the paper offered) Christie also gave the first description of the instrument that came to be known as the Wheatstone bridge.""(DSB).

Summary By supporting the Christianization process within their realm, Carolingian rulers not only served matters of faith, obedience, and healing of the soul; they also intended to unify the conquered tribes, remove their pagan traditions, and strengthen royal power. Carolingian sermon collections provide significant insights into the cultural, political, and social background to the process of Christianization in the Carolingian world. Five sample collections compiled by leading intellectuals are now explored extensively and comparatively for the first time. Im Frankenreich waren es im Anschluss an die Reformen unter Bonifatius insbesondere die karolingischen Kaiser und K nige des 8. und 9. Unter ihrer Leitung und im Verbund mit den Gro en des Reiches wurde im Rahmen der so genannten karolingischen Renaissance auch die Religion vereinheitlicht. Une des éditions originales du premier grand succès théâtral de Chénier. Charles IX est une pièce qui attaque, presqu'ouvertement, le régime de Louis XVI, ici personnifié dans le caractère faible et sans volonté de Charles IX ; cette pièce, conçue trois ans plus tôt, ne fut jouée que le 4 novembre 1789, en raison du barrage de la Cour et de la censure. Le succès fut prodigieux et cette représentation eut toute l'importance d'un événement historique. Danton s'écria alors : "Si Figaro a tué la noblesse, Charles IX tuera le royauté".Plusieurs éditions ont paru sous la même date ; le portrait de Chénier d'après C. Lefebvre, les sept portraits des principaux personnages et les trois figures de Borel représentant trois scènes sont postérieurs aux deux premières éditions mais ont quelquefois été rajoutés dans divers exemplaires. Celui-ci correspond très exactement à l'exemplaire de la Sorbonne (signatures : [ ]2, A-Q8, R4 et prix : "3 livres 12 sols"), il fait probablement partie du premier ou second tirage (Soleinne, 2366 ; Quérard, II-173 ; Barbier, I-819 ; André Monglond : "La France révolutionnaire et impériale").Quelques petites usures sans gravité et un coin restauré ; bon exemplaire dans l'ensemble.

The early fourteenth century was an explosive period in English history that produced international intrigue and a number of important treatises on political thought. This volume offers for the first time in English translation several important commentaries on the political scene in early fourteenth-century England: Walter de Milimete's On the Nobility, Wisdom, and Prudence of the King (1327), the two versions of William of Pagula's Mirror of King Edward III (1331 and 1332), and William of Ockham's Whether the Ruler Can Accept Church Property for his Own Needs, namely, in the Case of War, even against the Wishes of the Pope (1338). All of these treatises offer important insight into such matters as the extent of the king's power in the fourteenth century and earlier, the relationship between Church and State, and the particular duties of the ruler towards various of his subjects. First appearance of this extremely importent paper in which Clairaut directly confirms the rotation and the orbital movement of the Earth around the Sun, and giving an indirect proof of the axiom, that the velocity of light does not depend on whether the light source moves away or toward the observer. The Earth does move after all !!In 1728 James Bradley, trying to measure the stellar parallax, discovered stellar aberration - the angular displacement of the apparent direction of starlight due to the earth's motion - and attributed it to the combined effect of the finite velocity of light and the earth's orbital velocity. But Bradley had not given any theoretical proof, but Clairaut did in the offered paper.Aberration is ""the apparent change in direction of a source of light caused by an observers component of motion perpendicular to the impinging rays. During this time the telescope has moved a short distance, causing the photons to reach a spot on the focal plane, displayed from the former image position... This discovery provided the first direct physical confirmation of the Copernican theory.
