It also explained the diurnal variation of the earth's magnetic force.In 1767 van Swinden obtained the chair of philosophy, logic, and metaphysics at Franekar University. He studied all the popular scientific topics of the period, especially magnetism, electricity, meteorolgy, and chemistry, and corresponded with many leading scientists, including Bonnet, Euler, Deluc, J. C. Wilcke, Bertholon, and Lalande. His Tentamen de magnete (1772) dealt with his mathematical theory of magnetism, and in 1777 he and Coulomb shared the gold medal of the Paris Academy of Sciences for a very detailed prize essay on magnetism, Recherches sur les aiguilles aimantées. Sylvester took the functions of the coefficients that serve to decide the reality of the roots, and treated them as coordinates of a point in n-dimensional space. A point is or is not ""facultative"" according to whether there correspons, or fail to correspond, an equation with real coefficients. The character of the roots depends on the bounding surface or surfaces of the facultative regions, and on a single surface depending on the ""discriminant.""(DSB XIII, p. 219).‎

‎Jacopo Tintoretto is one of the most famous 16th century Venetian painters alongside Tizian and Veronese. His Gonzaga Cycle, now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, belongs among the most important 16th century history cycles even if it has not been properly appreciated yet. It was Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga who commissioned Tintoretto to paint a series of eight paintings for two - still existing - rooms in the Palazzo Ducale at Mantova. The first part, completed in 1579, is dedicated to the four markgraves of Mantovia, the second, completed in May 1580, to the dukes Federico II and Francesco III. This publication features an extensive analysis of the finished paintings as compared to radiographic images, thus providing new insights into Tintoretto?s method and allowing for new assessment of the complete cycle.
