Summary The work of the Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi (1905-1988) brings a special urgency to the main questions of musical thought. These questions concern subjectivity in composition and music making; the relationship between sound, structure, and form; the relationship between improvisation and composition; and the role of musical writing in terms of composition and performance. This is undoubtedly also the product of his complex working method, in which improvisation, composition, musical writing, and performance follow one another, each imposing their own, often divergent, mark on the end result. The opening of the Isabella Scelsi Foundation archive in Rome in 2009 highlighted the significance of the composer while facilitating new research perspectives on his work. Now is the right time for a larger publication to document and propagate recent results and new approaches. Summary This volume focuses on one of the most crucial parts of Haydn's career-a key era in which the experiments of the 1770s arrived at the consolidation and definition of new compositional forms and practices in the 1780s. The 'mature' Haydn represents a musician marked by full creative ferment in all musical genres and reveals the profile of a composer at the peak of his career. Through new research, this book examines the views of Haydn's compositional practice as both self-aware and as adaptations based on the public's changing tastes. Such was an achievement that Haydn obtained without betraying the principles of balance, solidity and expressiveness that he developed during decades of musical practice at the Esterházy court. Summary The second half of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century was a time of great historical and social upheavals ? a melting pot of events whose repercussions are still felt. The first industrial revolution, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic wars: such were events that gradually undermined the status quo of the Ancien régime. Napoleon Bonaparte is the keystone of this period, given his role as an innovator of aspects of the military, political, civil, artistic and cultural life of his time. This book explores the musical changes brought on by the multifaceted pre- and post-Napoleonic sonic world. It focuses on the politicised dramaturgy at the Paris Opera, on the incredible diffusion of French opera in the German-speaking world, and on the question of national identity in Italian, Polish, Spanish and Portuguese contexts during this politically critical period. Beyond operas and cantatas in praise of Napoleon, this book also highlights the mechanical soundscape of the Empire, the repertoire of incidental music and the varied fortunes of the music business at that time. Finally, it analyses the place of female singers or composers from a gendered perspective. TABLE OF CONTENTS FEDERICO GON - EMMANUEL REBEIL, Preface POLITICS AND NATIONAL IDENTITY 1. ------- The work of Russian-French sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1888-1967) is full of mythological figures, including Diane, Narcissus and Orpheus. Zadkine particularly identified with the latter. Just as Orpheus managed with his music to prompt animals, plants and even rocks to dance, so the artist brought material to life with his hands. Zadkine therefore referred to this creative metamorphosis as ?the Orphic event?. He also turned his own life story into a myth. The idea of becoming an artist had been revealed to him as a child, he said, when he had fallen with his hand in the clay. From that point on, Zadkine allowed himself to be guided by nature, which he regarded as a source of perpetual change.

Summary According to an old historiographic tradition, the Spanish Golden Age placed the imitation of nature at the service of religion: its radical naturalism responded to the deep faith of that culture and moment. Crime & Illusion argues the opposite. It defends the thesis that the fundamental problem artists of the Golden Age confronted was not imitation but Truth. Moreover a large part, maybe the best part, of Spanish Baroque religious imagery is better understood as a complex exercise in addressing the spectators' doubts. Hovering on the horizon of an emerging empiricism, artists created their images as pieces of evidence, arguments for belief. Crime & Illusion reconstructs and interprets this judicial or forensic aspect of early modern visual culture at the center of a political, religious, and scientific triangle. Finally, the book explores the artists' skeptical reflection on the problematic relationship of painting and sculpture to the art of truth.

Summary Felipe Pereda reconstructs the history of religious art in Spain between two crucial dates in the "politics of the image" enforced by the "Reyes Católicos": 1478 and 1501. By focusing first on Seville, then on Granada Pereda evokes the first moments of the institution of the "Santo Oficio" and its later developments. In both cities, the local authorities had established the obligation for citizens to keep religious images within their houses. In Seville, the authorities in particular targeted the "marranos" (Jewish converts); in Granada, the new "moriscos" (converted Muslims). In both cases, the edicts emanated from the confessor of Queen Isabella of Castile, Fray Hernando de Talavera, himself of "converso" origin. At the intersection of social history and intellectual history, Images of Discord shows in which ways religious and social conflicts determined the status and development of sacred art in late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Castile and Andalusia and, more broadly, the history of Spanish art in the early modern period.

Summary The ninth-century monk and poet Notker of St Gall played a seminal role in the history of the sequence, a distinctly medieval poetic genre of liturgical chant, through his Liber Ymnorum. Notker harkens back beyond the classical Latin and Greek tradition, drawing on Hebrew models; his texts combine theological complexity with poetic invention of extraordinary reach. Despite the opposition his innovations provoked in traditionalist circles, Notker's sequences were widely adopted. Promotion by the monastery of St Gall and posthumous idealization of the poet ensured the Liber Ymnorum would become a prototypical model for a wide array of imitations in the genre until the late sixteenth century.

The first-ever exhibition curated by Peter Lindbergh himself, shortly before his untimely death, Untold Stories at the Düsseldorf Kunstpalast served as a blank canvas for the photographer?s unrestrained vision and creativity. Given total artistic freedom, Lindbergh curated an uncompromising collection that sheds an unexpected light on his colossal oeuvre. This book offers an extensive, firsthand look at the highly personal collection. Renowned the world over, Lindbergh?s images have left an indelible mark on contemporary culture and photo history. Here, the photographer experiments with his own oeuvre and narrates new stories while staying true to his lexicon. In both emblematic and never-before-seen images, he challenges his own icons and presents intimate moments shared with personalities who had been close to him for years, including Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Robin Wright, Jessica Chastain, Naomi Campbell, Charlotte Rampling and many more. This volume presents more than 100 photographs?many of them unpublished or short-lived, often having been commissioned by monthly fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper?s Bazaar, Interview, Rolling Stone, W Magazine, or The Wall Street Journal. An extensive conversation between Lindbergh and Kunstpalast director Felix Krämer, as well as an homage by close friend Wim Wenders, offer fresh insights into the making of the collection. The result is an intimate personal statement by Lindbergh about his work.
