The trauma of the First World War had an immensely powerful effect on the painters, sculptors, and printmakers who participated in it. They produced an extraordinary range of striking images that conveyed the immediacy and horror of their experiences and feelings. This arresting book is the first to bring together and examine the full international array of images spawned by the Great War. Richard Cork shows how avant-garde artists from Europe, Russia, and the United States challenged the recruiting posters and other propagandist views of the struggle by producing art that reflected the degradation of the trenches. The conflict was anticipated before hostilities began by the visionary and apocalyptic work of painters such as Meidner and Kandinsky. Chagall, Nevinson, Hartley, Beckmann, Kirchner, and other artists were quick to define war's essential tragedy with objective, expressionist, or allegorical art that alluded to their own wartime experiences. The harshest images of war were made in the latter stages or after the Armistice, when artists such as Dix had time to consider their participation in the war. Ironically, the post-war years also witnessed the redemptive work of Spencer and Brancusi, who after the Armistice produced monumental affirmations of brotherhood, fortitude, and love. This lavishly illustrated book will accompany a major exhibition of art from World War I, to be held at the Altes Museum in Berlin from June 4 to August 28 and at the Barbican Art Gallery in London from September 29 to December 11, 1994.‎

‎Zilverwerk was door de eeuwen heen een bron van inspiratie voor heel wat kunstenaars. Religieus zilverwerk heeft het vak tot ongekende hoogten gebracht, maar in de loop van de 20e eeuw werden de opdrachten schaarser. Steeds meer ateliers moesten de deuren sluiten en al snel verdween monumentaal zilverwerk op de achtergrond. Gaandeweg lieten ook de opleidingen te wensen over. Het is de droom van vader Rob en zoon Jaap Thalen om opnieuw het allermooiste te maken: objecten, gebruiksvoorwerpen, kunstobjecten in zilver zoals die al heel lang bijna niet meer te vinden zijn. Monumentale creaties waarvoor zowel het oude vakmanschap als de meest geavanceerde technieken vereist zijn. ‎When St James the Great was beheaded in Jerusalem in AD 61, he became the first apostle to be martyred for his faith. According to legend, his disciples brought the body in a miraculous stone boat to north-western Spain, where they buried it in a place now known as Santiago de Compostela. Following a claim in the early ninth century that the tomb had been rediscovered, people began flocking to the site to venerate the relics. Santiago became, after Rome and Jerusalem, the most important place of pilgrimage in medieval Christendom. Pilgrims from all over Europe broke away from their daily routine and set off along the 'Way of St James' through France and Spain to the remote town of Santiago. They travelled from hostel to hostel, visiting the churches and other holy places which lay on the route. ‎"Hotel Gems of France" is the first in a series of books profiling what one might consider to be the world's dream vacation hotels. To me, it's a perfect scaled-down blend between the "Resorts & Great Hotels" and "Architectural Digest" magazines. There are 34 "gems" in this book, each portrayed in four to eight pages of text and gorgeous photographs. The back of the book contains an excellent section of factual information (e.g., rooms, facilities, activities, location), plus a map of France pinpointing the location of each hotel. I wouldn't necessarily use this book as a travel planning tool unless I had lots of time and was expecting to cover lots of territory. There are probably more than 34 hotels just in the Latin Quarter of Paris, so taking this number within all of France doesn't make for useful comparisons. Also, there are no rate listings for any of the hotels, but I'd guess that the term "upscale" would fairly describe the price, as it surely does the quality of the properties. Still, for those who enjoy superb photography, or who wish to get an introduction to France's beauty, or who might REALLY go on a dream vacation, this is a wonderful book. If I were rating this with my heart and eyes only, it would be 5 stars.‎

Cet ouvrage constitue une très belle documentation sur le milieu rural en Grande-Bretagne. Quelques petites rousseurs éparses, beau livre dans l'ensemble. ‎
