Studia Paedagogica : 23. In this book a study is presented on the attitudes of 12- to 20-year-old youngsters towards social limits, imposed by their social and educational environment by means of laws, rules, values, norms or expectations. The study is part of a research programme on the course and treatment of juvenile delinquency, which started at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen during the eighties. Young people's attitudes towards social limits are assessed by the 'Standard Reaction Instrument'. A critical incident technique is used to elicit young people's knowledge, behavioral intentions and motivations in ten hypothetical situations including social limits. The instrument was administered from youngsters in secondary schools and from same-aged detained youngsters who have committed at least one criminal offence which has been recorded by police or judicial authorities. The responses of both groups are compared in order to test the validity of the instrument. Further, the relationship is tested between the youngsters' attitudes towards social limits and self-reported delinquent and aggressive behavior. Finally, a comparison is made between the responses of Flemish and Dutch youngsters. Starting point of the empirical study is a social psychological view on juvenile delinquency. In this view, which is based on the self-presentation paradigm developed by the sociologist Ervin Goffman and the early symbolic interactionists, juvenile delinquency is considered as a means of social communication towards significant others (parents, teachers, peers, society). Special attention is paid to the development, maintenance and management of social reputation by the juvenile delinquent.

First apperance of an importent paper in which Grignard revealed the ""Grignard Reagent"", an important means of preparing organic compounds from smaller precursor molecules. For this work, Grignard was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1912 jointly with fellow Frenchman Paul Sabatier.""A large number of general synthetic methods had been developed by the end of the nineteenth century. However, one of the most versatile and importent was first described as the new century opened. This was the Grignard synthesis."" (Leicester ""A Source book in Chemistry 1900-1950"", where this paper is translated ""Some New Organometallic Compounds of Magnesium and Their Application to the Synthesis ofAlchohols and Hydrocarbons"").""Grignard treated magnesium turnings in anhydrous ether with methyl iodide at room temperature, preparing what came to be known as the Grignard reagent, which could be used for reaction with a ketone or an aldehyde without first being isolated. On hydrolyzing with dilute acid, the corresponding tertiary or secondary alcohol was produced in much better yield than Barbier had been able to obtain. Grignard’s discovery was reported in a short paper at a meeting of the Académie des Sciences in May 1900 (the paper offered)."" (DSB).

Ubangi, in central Africa, is a region where roads and influences meet. This vast country, which extends along the banks of the River Ubangi, is roughly bounded by Lake Chad in the north, by the Congo river in the south, by the Cameroonian border in the west and by the Sudanese border in the east. The sculpture of Ubangi remained for a long time, and quite unjustly, unrecognized. This work describes and compares the astonishing artistic lineages which flourish in this region. Ubangi is a markedly transnational region, located between the rainforest in the south and the savannah in the north, among peoples speaking different languages, among the politically decentralized societies of west Africa and the ancient kingdoms of east Africa. At the heart of these differences, true points of convergence exist, such as the initiation of adolescents at the onset of puberty or the cults of healing and fertility. At these rituals superb objets d??art were and still are traditionally used. Throughout the ages the region has been a cauldron of cultures under the influences of migration, assimilation and appropriation, but in spite of notable differences, its art nonetheless displays powerful visual coherence. The art is characterised particularly by sculptures in wood of human figures between 10 cm and two metres tall. Musical instruments, amulets and other ordinary objects reveal similarities of form with these figures. Masks and initiation items, but also photographs from the colonial era, illustrate the way in which certain rituals were handed down. This is the first time that a monograph has been devoted to this both varied and magnificent artistic heritage. New book.
