8vo, The Macmillan Company, New York, 1927, xxiv-213 pp. with a folding plate. Rappel du titre complet : Researches into the Mathematical Principles of the Theory of Wealth by Augustin Cournot 1838. Translated by Nathaniel T. Bacon with an Essay on Cournot and mathematical Economics and a Bibliography of Mathematical Economics by Irving Fisher [ Inscribed : "G. H Bousquet Don d'Irving Fisher" ]
From Irving Fisher's library. Joseph Schumpeter described him as "the greatest economist the United States has ever produced". Good (waterstains on cover, a few manuscript annotations by G. H. Bousquet). Annotation manuscrite en garde : "G. H. Bousquet Don d'Irving Fisher" [ unidentified manuscript indication in french : Gift from Irving Fisher ].

First printing of this paper announcing the discovery of Iodine. Courtois found this substance, which he suspected to be a new element, while burning algae in order to obtain sodium and potassium compounds. Although Courtois discovered the element in 1811, the announcement of it was not made until two years later after he had turned it over to Charles Desormés and Nicolas Clément.""The first publication on iodine are somewhat confusing. Courtois's research is found in a paper attributed to him (the paper offered) but actually the work of Clément.... was followed by an anonymous article (the second paper offered). Gay-Lussac. who repeated and extended Courtios's work, was responsible for this paper. Courtois himself published nothing. These two articles were immediately followed by short contributions of Gay-Lussac and Humphry Davy on the new element (third and fourth paper offered). The essays in this collection challenge cultural materialists in different disciplines to articulate specific relationships between modern theoretical positions and the ideas and conventions that shaped the production of medieval and Renaissance cultures in Europe. The phrase 'cultural materialism', coined by Raymond Williams in 1977, names an approach to cultural analysis that interrogates the socio-economic conditions within which artefacts are produced as well as their participation in other ideological and material fields of culture. This approach, which has led to the emergence of cultural studies as a discipline, has also contributed to a sea-change within medieval and Renaissance scholarship. Disciplines that have traditionally studied cultural artefacts like literature and painting have increasingly emphasized the kinds of questions Williams articulated, focusing on the material production and ideological operation of objects once thought of in idealized or purely aesthetic terms. By the same token, historians - whose work, of necessity, has always tended to deal with the material traces of culture - have increasingly been willing to consider the social and ideological importance of art. The increasing popularity of this cultural studies approach to the past has in turn spurred investigation into other kinds of materiality. Recent historical and literary scholarship, for example, has become increasingly aware of the ways in which the lived materiality of the human body informs a range of cultural discourses. Insofar as it still typically attends to the material/ideological significance of the artefacts it considers, such scholarship falls within the generous confines of cultural studies. But where the Marxist tradition inherited from Williams tends to see economic relations as basic, this school of thought sees the experience of the body - always historicized, and understood as the basis for constant symbolic appropriation into other fields of discourse - as an alternative and perhaps more fundamental kind of materiality. Material Culture and Cultural Materialisms in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance attests to the vitality of these approaches to materialist scholarship within and across different periods, disciplines, and national traditions. Present volume collects works on spiritual life of the most influential religious writers of the Middle Ages. The Canons following the Rule of St Augustine at St Victor in Paris were some of the most influential religious writers of the Middle Ages. They combined exegesis and spiritual teaching in a theology that was deeply rooted in tradition but also attuned to current developments in the schools of Paris. This selection of their writings on the spiritual life is divided into three sections. The first presents three works by Achard and Richard which treat the development of Christian life from the beginnings of conversion to the perfection of love and contemplation. Prayer, meditation and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are the subjects of the works by Hugh and Richard included in the second section. The final section presents poetical, exegetical and homiletic works honoring Mary by Hugh, Adam, Richard and Godfrey. This rich and representative sampling of Victorine works is a clear window into a world that still has much to offer modern readers interested in spirituality, medieval or moder. The editor of this volume is Christopher P. Evans (PhD, St Louis University; Department of Theology, University of St. Thomas, Houston, TX), the editor of Hildegard of Bingen?s Explanatio symboli sancti Athanasii (2007), Vita sancti Disibodi, Vita sancti Ruperti and the Triginta octo questionum solutiones (forthcoming; Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis) and Radulphus Ardens: The Questions on the Sacraments (2010).

Summary This collection of essays aims to offer a multi-disciplinary approach to nineteenth and early twentieth century scholarship on Jesus and early Christianity, which illustrates the width and depth of the questions that critical reflections on the historical Jesus raised in and beyond the field of liberal theology. More precisely, it focuses on Jesus scholarship as practiced in various disciplines and fields that engaged with the academic study of religion. On the other hand, this volume aims for a comprehensive, multi-perspectivist historicization of this scholarship, considering the full range of religious, cultural, racial, political, and national dynamics that hosted the many controversies over the historical Jesus. Divided into five sections, the eleven essays in this book are organized according to guiding themes and a loose chronological structure. The first section revisits the roots of the Forschung in Liberal-Protestant Germany, and especially focuses on the maturation of historical-critical consciousness in the work of Reimarus (and his predecessors), Schleiermacher and Strauss. The second section is concerned with the rise of the ?oriental Jesus? against the background of the making of the academic, non-theological study of religion as a scientific discipline. The third section explores how themes related to the historical Jesus and the rise of Christianity were treated among different academic disciplines from the early second half of the nineteenth century onwards. The fourth section explores how the historical Jesus was at the same time further explored by the biblical scholars and theologians who integrated new comparative methods in their research. The fifth section, finally, highlights the cultural-political appropriations that were made of scholarly writings on Jesus, which not rarely constituted the bricks with which radical political movements built their houses.
