Bunsen and Roscoe found that for some time after the experiment started - a time they called the induction period - no reation took place"" then the reaktion rate slowly increased until a constant rate, proportional to the intensity of the light source used, was reached. ‎First appearance in English of a classic paper in the investigations of chemical reactions produced by lightrays. Their joined work - from 1855-59 - founded scientific photochemistry, by determining the phenomena of induction, deduction and extinction. They found that the beginning of light reaction takes place at first very slowly and that the velocity increases gradually until it attains a constant value, observing also that steam accelerates the action and that air retards it. Faint discoloration to lower part of upper wrapper. Frontispiece. 59 pp., textillustrations. Faint scattered brownspots, mainly to the first leaves. With dedication from the author on front free endpaper ""H.P./ General Baron von Bülow/ with the authors compliments."" Bülow is probably the Danish Genreral-Major Otto Chr. Severin August von Bülow (1812-95) or it could be General-Lieutnant Carl Ernst Johan Bülow (1814-1890) who was a member of the Danish legation to the English Court from 1865 to 1880. A note on the front free endpaper states, that the book in 1885 was handed over to the School of Gymnastics by General Fog. On foot of the same leaf some discoloration left over from a paperlabel.‎

‎2 frontispices et une gravure sur chaque page de titre . Pas de rousseurs. Trés joli exemplaire publié l'année du centenaire de la naissance de Samuel Butler dans un précieuse reliure de l'époque. Hudibras est un faux poème héroïque du XVIIe écrit par Samuel Butler (1612-1680). L'œuvre est une Parodie et une satire visant principalement le puritanisme, les presbitériens ainsi que certaines autres factions impliquées dans la première révolution anglaise. Le texte est divisé en trois parties, respectivement écrites en 1663, 1664 et 1678. Publié à peine quatre ans après le début de la restauration anglaise et le retour de Charles II d'Angleterre, le poème trouva un large succès auprès du public. Le point de vue est loin d'être neutre, puisque Butler était un fervent royaliste : seul le parti parlementaire est tourné en ridicule. L'auteur profite également de l'occasion pour parodier la poésie courtisane et souvent insipide de l'époque. L'histoire est celle de Sir Hudibras, un chevalier errant décrit avec une emphase si élogieuse et appliquée si lourdement que l'on touche aux confins de l'absurde, et que la personnalité sournoise et arrogante du personnage devient aisément visible. Hudibras est notamment vanté pour sa maîtrise de la logique, alors qu'il ne cesse de faire preuve de sa stupidité. Mais surtout, c'est sa ferveur religieuse qui fait l'objet des plus vives attaques. Le nom de Hudibras est tiré du nom de l'un des Chevaliers dans La Reine des fées d'Edmund Spenser, lequel le décrit comme « moins bon par ses actes que grand par son nom », et comme « plus grand en force que sage en action ».‎
