‎Doorheen heel het leven en werk van Ernest Claes loopt een 'mariale' draad. De Mariaverering en de jaarlijkse bedevaart naar Scherpenheuvel hebben in zijn herinneringen een vaste plaats. In 1933 verscheen de eerste editie van Toen Ons-Lieve-Vrouwke heuren Beeweg deed, een novelle geschreven in opdracht van de beroemde Maastrichtse uitgever A.A.M Stols. Voor latere edities veranderde Ernest Claes de titel in De wonderbare tocht. Het verhaal beschrijft de wonderbaarlijke tocht van Ons-Lieve-Vrouwke van Scherpenheuvel die een bezoek brengt aan haar ?zusters?, namelijk de vele Lieve Vrouwkes in Vlaanderen en Walloni . Deze nieuwe, vijfde druk wordt ingeleid door Rudolf van de Perre en verschijnt naar aanleiding van de 125ste verjaardag van de kroning van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Scherpenheuvel. Het boek wordt ge llustreerd met de oorspronkelijke tekeningen van Felix Timmermans en met illustraties van Karlheinz Pieroth.‎

‎Tongeren is de oudste stad van Vlaanderen, gesticht door Romeinse veroveraars aan het begin van onze tijdsrekening.
