Vanaf de hoge middeleeuwen trokken pelgrims massaal naar Geel om een glimp op te vangen van de heilige Dimpa en brachten ze hulde aan de plaatselijke beroemdheid in de hoop hun psychische problemen te verlichten. Ook vandaag staat Geel nog bekend omwille van zijn bijzondere omgang met geesteszieken, die er thuis bij de inwoners worden opgevangen. In de vroege zestiende eeuw deed de populariteit van de heilige Dimpna de abt van de abdij van Tongerlo besluiten een enorm altaarstuk te laten maken dat het levensverhaal van deze bijzondere heilige zou verbeelden. De opdracht kwam in handen van de Antwerpse schilder Goossen Van der Weyden, kleinzoon van Vlaamse Primitief Rogier, die in zijn eclectische stijl heel wat ele menten van zijn grootvader overnam. Het resultaat van deze opdracht, het monumentale Dimpna-altaarstuk, werd recentelijk verworven door The Phoebus Foundation. De panelen werden gedurende drie jaar behandeld in het restauratieate lier van de Foundation. Het verbluffende resultaat leidde tot nieuwe inzichten over de ontstaansgeschiedenis van het altaar stuk, zijn maker en opdrachtgever, en over de cultus van de heilige Dimpna.
