‎Summary Even if his wide-ranging research work is not limited to Roman agrarian history, this is the field in which his contribution has been decisive and internationally recognized. For this reason, Domenico Vera chose this theme when he planned to gather in a single coherent volume a number of texts that first appeared in not easily accessible publications. The critical examination to which he submitted the sources over the years enabled him to radically renew the account that was traditionally given of the late imperial rural world, at opposite ends of the self-sufficiency that was posited by the 19th century historians, while revisiting the chronology of its implementation. Domenico Vera challenges an alleged break in the Italian agricultural flourishing throughout the 2nd and 3rd centuries as well as an alleged continuity from the 4th-6th centuries colonate up to medieval serfdom, or the prefiguration of the large Carolingian estate as soon as the Later Roman Empire. Domenico Vera clearly identified those three main features which make a difference in agrarian structures before and after the 3rd century: "deconcentration of production (hence the prevalence of colonate)"; "indirect land management (hence the expansion of a multi-level tenancy system)"; "concentration of the rent and surplus held by the landlords (hence the decline of the banking professions) and the tendency to the overlapping of great landlordship and wholesale trade". From now on Italian agrarian economy and society organised themselves around two antithetic but non-adversarial poles: the land barons and an authentic "peasant society". This volume aims at giving to more readers easier access to key texts some of which were published in hardly available journals or conference proceedings. Archaeologist, historian, philologist, Javier Arce is a "total" Romanist, in the sense that his field of competence is nothing less than the entire Roman period, hence the scope of the topics treated in the three chapters of this volume (Classical Antiquity - Hispania - Late Antiquity). Although he admires Greek and Roman Antiquity, he has mainly developed his research in the field of Late Antiquity, for which he is now known worldwide. He is at times a specialist in imperial history and archaeology of the 4th and 5th centuries, both in the West and in the East, with a more pronounced taste for the figures of Constantius II, Julian and Theodosius I, for the imperial ceremonial and for the residences of the emperors; and again a specialist of Late Roman and Visigothic Spain, therefore of the transition to the Middle Ages in the Iberian Peninsula, until the Arab invasion. ‎First monograph on this Belgian artist. In his work, Vincent Geyskens examines the position of painting in contemporary society. Abstraction, figuration, a variety of media and styles of painting are engaged with as he probes their possibilities and limits. For an artist, painting is a way of turning thoughts into something tangible, translating them into substance. The exhibition at M will place the spotlight on the breadth of his experience and will gather together diverse series and types of work produced over the course of his oeuvre. The focus will be on his output during the past ten years, complemented by a number of older reference works. The exhibition forges links between various approaches and gives voice to his quest as a painter for the status of the image and visual representation in the present day. M is displaying not only collages, sketches, and painted series of frames, but also paintings that range from still lifes and portraits to abstract colour compositions with thickly applied paint. The publication will also zoom in on his practical work over the past ten years, bringing together various series in free-ranging connection with one another. Dominic van den Boogerd has written an explanatory article on his recent work, while Eva Wittocx has interviewed the artist about his choices and thought processes. The book is amply illustrated. AUTHORS: Dominic van den Boogerd (1959, Breda) is an art critic based in Amsterdam. His reviews and essays have been published in numerous exhibition catalogues and art magazines, including Metropolis M, ArtReview and De Witte Raaf. His collected essays on painting, Great Temptations (2018), were published by Roma Publications in Dutch and English editions. Currently, he is Head of Research and Education at De Ateliers, Amsterdam, where he was director from 1995 to 2018. Eva Wittocx (1975, Mechelen) is Head of Department and Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at M Leuven . There, she has curated exhibitions for artists such as Ugo Rondinone, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Yto Barrada, Patrick Van Caeckenbergh and Markus Schinwald. Previously, she worked as curator at STUK (Leuven) and S.M.A.K. (Ghent) . In addition, she is curator and co-founder of the live arts festival Playground , which M organizes annually together with STUK. In 2017 she represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale with artist Dirk Braeckman. Vincent Geyskens (1971, Lier) has previously had solo exhibitions of his work at S.M.A.K. (Ghent), Galerie Annette De Keyser (Antwerp), Trampoline (Antwerp), Envoy Gallery (New York) and CC De Garage (Mechelen). He has participated in various group exhibitions, including at KANAL - Centre Pompidou (Brussels), Roger Raveelmuseum (Machelen-Zulte), CIAP (Hasselt), Museum Dr. Guislain (Ghent) and Wiels (Brussels). Since 2007 he has taught at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Ghent). In addition, he also gives classes at La Cambre (Brussels) and at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (Ghent). Le passage l' crit n'est jamais une vidence ; les difficult s rencontr es par leurs auteurs t moignent de l'importance de cette mise par crit pour les soci t s qui l'ont produite. Qui sont leurs auteurs, comment ont-ils travaill ? Eux qui n' taient sans doute pas en contact avec la th orie savante de leur temps n'ont pas laiss de texte th orique pour clairer leur d marche, mais ces chartes permettent de d gager les grandes lignes de leur pens e politique. Le soin pris d crire le nouveau dispositif institutionnel le montre : il ne s'agit pas seulement d'un acte administratif, mais d'un v ritable programme politique et social. Ces chartes sont le produit de p riodes de troubles, avec ou plus souvent sans violence, pour mettre fin l'exclusivit politique des lites traditionnelles, en assurant un quilibre politique de long terme. Pour viter la fois le retour un pouvoir oligarchique et la d stabilisation par les masses populaires, leurs concepteurs ont une s rie de choix effectuer. Qui d signe les repr sentants des m tiers ?
