‎Cet ouvrage de l'urbaniste Jacques Riboud reproduit des textes écrits à différentes époques sur la création urbaine et ses multiples aspects. Dans les années 1960-70 il a crée de nouveaux quartiers sur les communes de Maurepas et de Villepreux en montrant qu'il était possible de construire un environnement urbain à base de maisons individuelles (maisons de ville), en opposition directe avec le style "domino" qui prévalait alors.
