Following this, Artur Barrio will visit several other European museums with a substantial Beuys collection where he will be able to continue his 'imaginary dialogue'. // The work of the Brazilian artist Artur Barrio (b. 1945, Portugal) consists mainly of 'situations' or temporary synaesthetic installations made of perishable, fragile and organic materials such as coffee, bread, urine, charcoal, wine, cloth, texts and so on. The ephemeral character of Barrio's installations compels the artist to seek alternative documentary techniques: photo, film, the artist's book, etc. In this respect, as well as in his approach to material and what is known as the 'didactic' mission, there are similarities in his work, in content and form, to that of Joseph Beuys (b. 1921 Krefeld - d. 1986 Dusseldorf). Roelant Savery (1578-1639) behoorde tot de grote groep Vlaamse kunstenaars die omstreeks 1600, tijdens de 80-jarige Oorlog, in de Noordelijke Nederlanden terecht zijn gekomen. Daar stonden zij aan de wieg van de grote bloei van de kunst in de zeventiende eeuw. Savery was een zeer veelzijdige tekenaar n schilder, gespecialiseerd in landschappen, dierstukken en bloemstillevens. Met encyclopedische precisie beeldde hij talloze verschillende soorten af: dieren, bloemen maar ook mensen uit diverse contreien, van Boheemse boeren tot joodse gelovigen in de synagoge. Savery werd d schilder van de uitgestorven dodo uit Mauritius. Meer dan tien jaar werkte Savery in dienst van de Habsburgse keizer Rudolf II in Praag, die hem op pad stuurde om de landschappen en mensen van zijn rijk vast te leggen. Afkomstig uit de Lage Landen moeten de watervallen in de Alpen diepe indruk hebben gemaakt op de kunstenaar. Na terugkeer in Nederland vestigde Roelant Savery zich in Utrecht, waar hij achter zijn huis een tuin aanlegde met kostbare bloemen en planten. Zo hoefde hij niet van huis te gaan om inspiratie op te doen voor zijn bloemstillevens.

Roelant Savery (1578-1639) belonged to the large group of Flemish artists who ended up in the Northern Netherlands around 1600, during the 80 Years' War. There they stood at the cradle of the great flowering of art in the seventeenth century. Savery was a very versatile draftsman and painter, specialized in landscapes, animal pieces and floral still lifes. He depicted countless different species with encyclopedic precision: animals, flowers but also people from various regions, from Bohemian farmers to Jewish worshipers in the synagogue. Savery became the painter of the extinct dodo from Mauritius. For more than ten years, Savery worked in the service of the Habsburg Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, who sent him to document the landscapes and people of his empire. Originating from the Low Countries, the waterfalls in the Alps must have made a deep impression on the artist. After returning to the Netherlands, Roelant Savery settled in Utrecht, where he created a garden behind his house with precious flowers and plants. This way he did not have to leave home to find inspiration for his flower still lifes.

Het is relatief onbekend dat veel Nederlandse en Vlaamse schilderijen uit de zeventiende eeuw door meer dan n kunstenaar zijn gemaakt. Vaak zijn het buitengewoon fraaie kunstwerken, die hoogtepunten vormen in de oeuvres van de afzonderlijke meesters. Summary The volume offers the first critical edition of the medieval Latin translation of Aristotle's Physiognomonica. This treatise, nowadays considered pseudo-Aristotelian, is translated into Latin between 1258 and 1266 by Bartholomew of Messina and deals with physiognomy, a discipline which connects outward appearance and inward character traits. The translation received wide circulation at the University of Paris by means of several exemplaria. The Physiognomonica has survived in 128 manuscripts, which makes it Bartholomew's most diffused translation. The introduction of the volume first discusses the text and manuscript tradition and then the relation to the Greek model. It appears that the Latin translation contains a unique version of the text compared to the extant Greek manuscripts, which makes it an important witness for the Greek tradition as well. Kiezen en beslissen is een wezenlijk onderdeel van het menselijk leven, en het vermogen om juiste keuzes en beslissingen te nemen is een voorwaarde om goed te kunnen leven. Aan het maken van een keuze gaat de vorming van een oordeel vooraf. Maar hoe komt deze tot stand? De Retorica van Aristoteles behandelt dit cruciale deel van het menselijk bestaan in de ruime contekst van communicatie tussen mensen. Behalve het woord zelf spelen bij zijn analyse ook de spreker en het gehoor een rol. De centrale gedachte is dat de retorica uiteindelijk te maken heeft met beoordelen: het gehoor zal tenslotte met de woorden van een redenaar instemmen of ze afwijzen. Het proces van overtuigen is dus gericht op het maken van een keuze. Voor Aristoteles bestaat de retorica in het vermogen om in een gegeven situatie de beschikbare middelen te vinden om te overtuigen. De retorica geeft daarmee geen garantie op succes: zij maakt het mogelijk een beslissing te nemen. Essentieel is dat het woord van de redenaar voor zijn gehoor acceptabel is: de gekozen overtuigingsmiddelen of argumenten mogen de grenzen van het op de heersende moraal en cultuur gebaseerde verwachtingspatroon niet te buiten gaan. De taak van de redenaar is dus in principe voorbereidend van aard. Waarin schuilt dan de kracht van argumenten? Volgens Aristoteles speelt niet alleen de logica een rol. De effectiviteit van een redenering hangt ook af van factoren als de persoonlijkheid van de redenaar en de emotionele toestand waarin het gehoor verkeert. De retorica is daarom meer dan een techniek van welsprekendheid: ze behelst ook elementen van de psychologie en de sociologie. Hierin ligt de unieke betekenis van Aristoteles' Retorica: de observatie dat mensen hun beslissingen nemen als sociale wezens leidt tot een omvattende systematiek van het proces van oordeelsvorming. De retorica krijgt aldus erkenning als een puur menselijk fenomeen. Oorspronkelijk verschenen in het Oud-Grieks.

Summary This book forms the complement to the first volume published in 2000. The preface contains some remarks about the transmission of the text as a supplement to the first volume. Then follow the critical edition of books 6-10, and the indices for the whole text. The complete edition gives access to the longest and most important work from Aristotle's zoology, De historia animalium, in the Latin translation by William of Moerbeke. This version was part of the standard university curriculum in the late-medieval West. The bilingual indices give access to the richness of the translator's vocabulary and provide an indispensable tool for the study of his translation method. Except for De partibus animalium, all of Moerbeke's translations from the Aristotelian zoological corpus are now available in critical editions.

Aristoteles is de grondlegger van de biologie. Gedreven door een ongebreidelde belangstelling, een scherp waarnemingsvermogen en een onverzadelijke drang tot ordenen en verklaren, organiseerde hij een grootschalig onderzoeksproject dat tot doel had de dieren- en plantenwereld in al haar verscheidenheid in kaart te brengen en begrijpelijk te maken. De resultaten van dit project vonden hun neerslag in verscheidene geschriften, zoals Over dieren (waarin de mens overigens een prominente plaats inneemt) en Over voortplanting. Het gaat Aristoteles om meer dan een louter empirisch observeren van de verschijnselen. Hij is op zoek naar regelmaat en systematiek, naar kenmerken die dieren en diersoorten gemeen hebben en op grond waarvan ze in groepen kunnen worden ingedeeld. In dit boek is een van de wezenstrekken van Aristoteles' filosofie concreet te volgen. Summary Roman Imperial denarii from the first-third cen turies AD are, almost without exception, the most common ancient coinage to be found in Central, Northern, and Eastern Europe beyond the Roman limes. Perhaps surprisingly, however, a signifi cant percentage of these coins are in fact coun terfeit, comprised largely of denarii subaerati (plated denarii, fourr es) and denarii flati (base-metal cast copies). Moreover, these fake coins were not only manufactured by Romans them selves, but also by barbarian peoples in Eastern Europe, far from the Roman limes, in what should be considered a mass-scale phenomena. This volume draws together archaeologi cal, numismatic, and historical research in order to offer a new assessment of the production and use of counterfeit Roman Imperial denarii both within the European provinces of the Roman Empire and in European Barbaricum. Drawing on the results of the research project Barbarian Fakers. Manufacturing and Use of Counterfeit Roman Imperial Denarii in East-Central Europe in Antiquity, from the University of Warsaw, the papers gathered here explore the transfer of ideas, technology, and finished products that led to the transfer of counterfeit coinage across the Empire, and shed light on how, why, and when such coins were created and used.
