‎Roelant Savery (1578-1639) behoorde tot de grote groep Vlaamse kunstenaars die omstreeks 1600, tijdens de 80-jarige Oorlog, in de Noordelijke Nederlanden terecht zijn gekomen. Daar stonden zij aan de wieg van de grote bloei van de kunst in de zeventiende eeuw. Savery was een zeer veelzijdige tekenaar n schilder, gespecialiseerd in landschappen, dierstukken en bloemstillevens. Met encyclopedische precisie beeldde hij talloze verschillende soorten af: dieren, bloemen maar ook mensen uit diverse contreien, van Boheemse boeren tot joodse gelovigen in de synagoge. Savery werd d schilder van de uitgestorven dodo uit Mauritius. Meer dan tien jaar werkte Savery in dienst van de Habsburgse keizer Rudolf II in Praag, die hem op pad stuurde om de landschappen en mensen van zijn rijk vast te leggen. Afkomstig uit de Lage Landen moeten de watervallen in de Alpen diepe indruk hebben gemaakt op de kunstenaar. Na terugkeer in Nederland vestigde Roelant Savery zich in Utrecht, waar hij achter zijn huis een tuin aanlegde met kostbare bloemen en planten. Zo hoefde hij niet van huis te gaan om inspiratie op te doen voor zijn bloemstillevens.‎

‎Roelant Savery (1578-1639) belonged to the large group of Flemish artists who ended up in the Northern Netherlands around 1600, during the 80 Years' War. There they stood at the cradle of the great flowering of art in the seventeenth century. Savery was a very versatile draftsman and painter, specialized in landscapes, animal pieces and floral still lifes. He depicted countless different species with encyclopedic precision: animals, flowers but also people from various regions, from Bohemian farmers to Jewish worshipers in the synagogue. Savery became the painter of the extinct dodo from Mauritius. For more than ten years, Savery worked in the service of the Habsburg Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, who sent him to document the landscapes and people of his empire. Originating from the Low Countries, the waterfalls in the Alps must have made a deep impression on the artist. After returning to the Netherlands, Roelant Savery settled in Utrecht, where he created a garden behind his house with precious flowers and plants. This way he did not have to leave home to find inspiration for his flower still lifes.‎

‎Summary The volume offers the first critical edition of the medieval Latin translation of Aristotle's Physiognomonica. This treatise, nowadays considered pseudo-Aristotelian, is translated into Latin between 1258 and 1266 by Bartholomew of Messina and deals with physiognomy, a discipline which connects outward appearance and inward character traits. The translation received wide circulation at the University of Paris by means of several exemplaria. The Physiognomonica has survived in 128 manuscripts, which makes it Bartholomew's most diffused translation. The introduction of the volume first discusses the text and manuscript tradition and then the relation to the Greek model. It appears that the Latin translation contains a unique version of the text compared to the extant Greek manuscripts, which makes it an important witness for the Greek tradition as well. This version was part of the standard university curriculum in the late-medieval West. ‎Smaken verschillen, ook als het om gebouwen gaat en zeker wanneer die gebouwen gemaakt zijn van beton, heel veel beton. De een vindt het sculpturaal en imposant, de ander lomp en intimiderend. Terwijl het ene gebouw de monumentenstatus verwerft, wordt het andere gesloopt. De makers van BRUUT ? atlas van het brutalisme in Nederland gaat er niets boven het brutalisme. Dit boek is dan ook een ode aan misschien wel de meest verguisde bouwstijl. De makers van BRUUT, Arjan den Boer, Martijn Haan, Bart van Hoek, Martjan Kuit en Teun Meurs, vonden elkaar in hun gedeelde voorliefde voor het brutalisme. En ze zijn daarmee niet de enigen. De waardering van de bouwstijl beleeft wereldwijd een renaissance. ‎Summary Roman Imperial denarii from the first-third cen turies AD are, almost without exception, the most common ancient coinage to be found in Central, Northern, and Eastern Europe beyond the Roman limes.
