The importance of training and education is on the increase. While the production of 'human capital' is seen as a motor for a competitive economy, skills and expertise proof to be necessary for social mobility. Remarkably, in conceiving modern forms of 'apprenticeship', several mechanisms from the acien regime, seem to return. The difference between public and private initiative is disappearing, education and training is being confused, and in order to acquire generic skills as flexibility, communicability, self-rule, creativity and so on, youngsters have to learn -in context-. Even for maths, scholars now talk of 'situated learning'. Before the advent of a formal schooling system, training took place on the shop floor, under the roof of a master. The apprentice not only worked but also lived in his master's house and was thus trained and educated at the same time. In cities, this system was formally complemented by an official apprenticeship system, prescribing a minimum term to serve and an obligatory masterpiece for those who wanted to become masters themselves. Traditionally, historians see this as an archaic and backward way of training, yet this book's aim is to show that is was instead a very flexible and dynamic system, perfectly in tune with the demands of an early modern economy. In order to understand it fully, however, we should differentiate the informal training system organised via a 'free market' of indentures on the one hand and the institutionalised system of craft guilds on the other. In Antwerp, early modern guilds had a project of 'emancipating' their members. They didn't simply produce certain skills, but through a system of quality marks defended the honour of craftsmen. This is the difference with current practices. By representing hands-on skills as superior, guilds supplied a sort of symbolic capital for workers. New book.

The paintings that Rubens devoted to the theme of the youth of Christ are among the most impressive and influential examples of art that expressed Roman Catholic spirituality as reasserted at the Council of Trent. The vast majority of these works are his numerous images of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi. The oldest sources for these and other scenes from Christ's youth are of course the accounts of the Gospels, but these were usefully completed by several supplementary descriptions, more especially the Apocrypha, patristic literature, and the pious legends woven around the birth of Christ in the course of the Middle Ages. In his interpretations of the scenes from Christ's youth, Rubens built to a large extent on a pictorial tradition that had developed in the Low Countries and Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, in which mediaeval views and patterns originating from Northern Europe had merged with those of the Italian Renaissance. In Rubens's representations of scenes from Christ's youth, and especially in his many interpretations of the themes of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi, the ideas of Counter-Reformation iconography found their most explicit embodiment in the clear Eucharistic connotations that are present in these works Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard

The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries witnessed an exceptional flowering of artistry in the Burgundian Netherlands. It was then that the artists who we now call the Flemish Primitives developed their unique style of painting, typified by a strict type of naturalism and an exceptionally detailed representation of form, which brought them immediate international fame. In this book, Dirk De Vos provides a broad introduction to the painting of the Flemish Primitives based on some twenty carefully selected masterpieces. The high-quality illustrations, including dozens of details, offer art lovers the opportunity to take their time over viewing these works (normal access to which is often difficult) and to experience them in all their beauty.

This volume catalogues and discusses all the known representations by Rubens of the Life of Christ after the Passion, and the material is sufficiently varied to convey a brilliant impression of the energy, inventiveness and technical and artistic mastery - the art of Rubens. This volume catalogues and discusses all the known representations by Rubens of the Life of Christ after the Passion. It includes the little-known group of paintings and drawings of Christ Triumphant over Sin and Death, as well as the various depictions of the Conversion of Saint Paul, the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin, the Last Judgement, the Fall of the Damned and the Assumption of the Blessed. They range from small panels to the largest works Rubens ever painted and count amongst the most popular and influential of his compostions. In his catalogue Dr. Freedberg presents a considerable amount of new evidence relating to their evolution and patronage, while separate sections are devoted to particularly important and unusual aspects of their iconography. This book presents both an overview of the print production in the 17th century Southern Low Countries and a focused approach to the work of three collaborators of Rubens. Apart from their work as painters, these artists quickly penetrated the world of prints and each dominated a specific market segment. Abraham Van Diepenbeeck was a prolific designer of individual prints and print series. Erasmus Quelinus II often drew models for book-illustrations. Cornelis Schut ran an important workshop which produced many beautiful etchings. The book explores how these artists positioned themselves in an artistic field, operating in a highly competitive field that presented both threats and new opportunities. Their oeuvre is firmly set in a European context, spanning local, regional and international markets. An analysis is made of the relation between prints as reproductions of paintings and prints as autonomous inventions. The book argues that the importance of prints as autonomous creations has been underestimated for the 17th century. The book studies the connections between the three artists and some forty professional engravers who were active in 17th-century Antwerp. Many biographical data on these engravers are presented, and more than 100 prints are published for the first time. Ann Diels (1969) works at the Print Room of the Royal Library of Belgium and teaches the History of European Printmaking at the Free University of Brussels. She has published the New Hollstein volumes on the Collaert Family (2005-2006) and 'The Family Collaert (ca. 1555-1630) en de prentkunst in Antwerpen' (2009).
