Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History (HMSAH 49). Hugo van der Goes is a towering figure in the history of art. Hugely original, he exerted a massive influence, pushing the portrayal of volume, motion and light to its limits while exploring an inherited Christian iconography in profoundly new ways. This book identifies the artist?s painterly procedures as well as the religious practices and hopes his painting served. Focusing on Hugo?s masterpiece, the Portinari Altarpiece, Koster pictures the painter, his patron, and the wider public as a set of diverse forces fuelling this artist?s achievements. Painted in the Netherlands for a Florentine chapel, the altarpiece also reflects artistic exchange in the Fifteenth Century. Koster presents a ground-breaking technical examination of Hugo?s triptych and for the first time, readers can access all of the evidence in a high-resolution and easily-navigable form ? and for a work of supreme historical importance. But this book also studies the work?s origins in the Modern Devotion movement, Hugo?s personality, the machinations of a wealthy Italian donor, and the patterns of response within a church setting. Rich in information, wide-ranging in its sources, and original in its understanding of Hugo?s aims, this book also places ? uniquely ? the tools of its analysis in the hands of specialists and general readers alike.

Jan van Mieris was trained by his famous father Frans, and worked in the tradition of the Leiden 'fijnschilders'. Art historian and former owner M.J. Ripps about his Self-Portrait: "The theme of the artist with the tools of his trade to hand has a robust tradition on both sides of the Alps. In the middle sixteenth-century artists such as Catherina Sanders van Hemessen (c. 1500 - 1566) and Sofonisba Anguissola (c. 1532 - 1625) memorably depicted themselves with brushes, palette, and Mahlstick, as did leading artists of the subsequent generations. Jan van Mieris' self-portrait is in dialogue with that of his father Frans, and engages a tradition that ultimately reaches back to Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400 - 1464) and forward to Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669) - critical reference points with which the elder and younger Mieris would have been well acquainted. And by placing themselves at a ledge, father and son invoked a pictorial tradition with roots in Raphael's iconic portrait of Castiglione. In this little self-portrait, thus, grand traditions are encapsulated in miniature."

Caspar Netscher (1635/6-1684) was one of the most acomplished and successful artists active in the Netherlands during the latter part of the seventeenth century. Paradoxically, however, the same factors that made him so successful during his lifetime and into the eighteenth century also occasioned his exclusion from the modern canon of seventeenth-century Dutch painting, for his art represents a decisive move away from the hearty egalitarian aesthetic that prevailed during the earlier part of the century. Responding to (and helping define) his patrons' desire for international style and sophistication, Netscher's exquisite portraits and subject pieces are unmistakably Dutch, yet are imbued with an elegance more in keeping with progressive pan-European tastes. This is the first full-length study to examine the work of this important Dutch artist The text is complemented by an appendix of documents relevant to the artist (most previously unpublished), and concludes with an exhaustive catalogue raisonne of the paintings. The latter contains detailed information on 220 accepted paintings by the artist, 44 problematic attributions (including some compositions known only through copies and works that involve a significant amount of studio assistance); 470 rejected works; and 388 paintings mentioned in the literature prior to 1800 but presently untraced.
