EDITION ORIGINALE (Fergusson, II-60 ; Duveen, 376). Issu d'une famille écossaise qui émigra en France à l'époque des Stuart, Macquer opéra une véritable révolution, faisant de la chimie une science à part et non une branche de la pharmacie, ouvrant la voie aux Lavoisier, Gay-Lussac, Thénard, etc. Il fut le premier à constater que l'arsenic est un métal, que les alcalins décolorent le bleu de Prusse, que les diamants ne perdent rien de leur poids lorsqu'on les calcine à l'abri de l'air, etc. Il a décrit les propriétés de l'alumine, de la magnésie, du sulfate de chaux, du sel d'Epsom. Ses travaux sur les métaux sont reconnus. Membre de l'Académie des Sciences, Censeur Royal, professeur de chimie au Jardin du Roi, enfin il modernisa la Manufacture de Sèvres. Minuscule usure à trois coins, petit travail de ver dans la marge extérieure en coin inférieur de quelques feuillets du Tome 1, sinon bel exemplaire, bien relié, avec juste quelques très rares rousseurs.

monograph Gillis Mostaert was born in Hulst. According to the early artist biographer Karel van Mander Gillis Mostaert was the son of a common painter, the twin brother of the painter Frans Mostaert and the grandson of the painter Jan Mostaert.[3] While his brother Frans became a pupil of the landscape painter Herri met de Bles, Gillis studied landscape painting with Jan Mandijn.[1][4] Van Mander recounts that both brothers joined the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1555.[3] However, since Frans received a registered pupil in 1553 it is more likely that Frans had become a master in the Guild earlier.[5] He married Margareta Baes in 1563 and the couple had six children.[2] He was well-respected by his fellow painters. The painters Pieter Balten and Crispin van den Broeck were godfathers to his children born in 1571 and 1588. Inventories of art collections from his time show that his work received patronage of well-off private clients since they contained many expensive cabinet paintings of Mostaert

Jan van Mieris was trained by his famous father Frans, and worked in the tradition of the Leiden 'fijnschilders'. Art historian and former owner M.J.
