This study establishes for the first time Adam Pynacker's place of origin, the formation and development of his style as well as his contribution to the field of Dutch Italianate landscape painting. Pynacker's early paintings, dating from around 1648, are shown to reinforce Houbraken's statement that he visited Italy during the second half of the 1640s. In an in depth study of the artist's output of the 1650s, it is also demonstrated that Pynacker was familiar with the work of his contemporary Dutch Italianates, among them Jan Both, Jan Asselyn and Nicolaes Berchem. His relation with them as well as with a number of other Dutch painters, including the Rotterdam artist Ludolf de Jongh, is explored throughout the book.

volume X; The History of Achilles is a series of tapestries first commissioned by Rubens's second father-in-law Daniel Fourment, a tapestry-dealer in Antwerp. Very probably it was also Daniel Fourment who asked his famous son-in-law to provide the preparatory oil sketches, modelli and cartoons for the series. This cycle is not a very big project compared with other famous series designed by Rubens. Nevertheless, as Begemann puts is, " the excellence of the oil sketches and the modelli, and the sophistication of the artist's interpretation of the subject, make the series stand out as a major work ". In very good condition.

The Judgement of Paris - the tale of the shepherd-prince who gave Venus the prize in a beaty competition - was variously treated by classical writers and became a favourite theme for artists. No painter seems to have responded to the ancient story with more intelligence and entousiasm than Peter Paul Rubens, who devoted at least eight pictures to it.
