Over the past year Stephan Vanfleteren photographed this 'wall' of more than 2600 kilometres in his well-known black-and-white style. He planted his tripod on various beaches in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, climbed cliff faces in France, sailed between the fjords of Norway and stood in the surf in Denmark to photograph the ruins of the largest military structure of the previous century. ‎Unesco Cahier 4. Dit is geen biografie, laat staan een fotobiografie van Julien Schoenaerts. Een liefdesverklaring zou niet misstaan, al kan dat menigeen mishagen. Toegestaan is wat bevalt. Voor de fotograaf was en is Julien Schoenaerts een levenslang thema, voor de schrijver een decennialange opeenvolging van blijde en onvoorziene weken. Food of love van een fool for love. De fotograaf en de schrijver werden door de uitgever verzocht samen een fotoboek met bijschriften te maken. De schrijver wilde geen beschrijvende noch documentaire commentaren maar door de foto's vanuit hun onderwerp (of hun voorwerp) op gang gebrachte bespiegelingen. De fotograaf opteerde vanzelfsprekend voor foto's die hem na aan het hart liggen en wilde er niet meer dan drieendertig in het boek. Over de mogelijke betekenis van dat aantal mag de kijkende lezer zich het hoofd breken. Ofschoon de foto's een geschiedenis vertellen, hebben ze geen chronologie, ze staan althans niet in een als dusdanig te definieren volgorde. Ze hebben de chronologie van de herinnering en dus van gelijktijdigheid. De keuze van de foto's is arbitrair en derhalve niet te verantwoorden. Dat doen we dan ook niet, we delen de feiten mee.
