Small in-4, 260 x 200 mm. Edited work from the original text of 1622 with introduction, notes and appendix by James A. Williamson. Book deals with the travels and observations of Sir Richard Hawkins in the late 16th century. Seal of the Brazilian physician, scientist, politician and chronicler, Artur Hehl Neiva, former owner of this copy, on page XIX of the introduction and on page 17 of the text.‎

‎A well preserved copy. Pages slightly yellowed. A few insect holes in the initial pages, always outside the text. Solitary hole in the lower margin follows and page 52 of the introduction. Editorial binding in good condition but with some dirt from time and some insect holes. Stamp of the (Brazilian) Cândido Mendes Colleges dated 1972 pp. 24-25.‎

Né à Bahia, au Nord-Est du Brésil, le photographe Sérgio Guerra travaille pour la communication du gouvernement d'Angola. Passionné par ce pays d'Afrique, il y consacre ici son cinquième livre. Guerra a tenu à rencontrer les Hereros, une ethnie du sud du pays qui maintient un mode de vie ancestral. Un ouvrage fascinant et plus que dépaysant, quasi introuvable hors hémisphère Sud.‎

‎Rousseurs aux plats et aux tranches, légères traces d'usure au dos, marges un peu jaunies à l'intérieur mais plutôt frais pour l'âge et au vu du papier courant. Apparemment jamais lu. Plus d'un demi-siècle après publication, celui qui aura le plaisir de couper les pages de ce livre sera probablement son premier lecteur !‎

Accompagné d'un très bel emboîtage protecteur clamshell demi-maroquin vert à coins et à motifs, 2 faux-nerfs sur le dos et titre frappé or à la verticale, signé HABILIS BRASIL, atelier de reliure renommé de São Paulo vainqueur d'un prix en 2009. Livre de la Collection Coréenne composée sous la direction de Victor Segalen à Péking pour George Crès, éditeur à Paris. Dédié en hommage à Paul Claudel. Trois sceaux chinois apposés à l'encre rouge, le premier avec une légère décharge sur la page opposée, dont la signification est expliquée à la dernière page. Quelques plis d'humidité au bas de la première page, plis et légères traces sombres aux dernières pages, sinon excellent état. Plusieurs pages présentent des textes en coréen, chaque poème est accompagné d'une épigraphe coréenne. "Ce n'est pas - comme on le croit parfois - une simple réimpression de l'originale de 1912, puisqu'elle contient 64 stèles, soit 16 poèmes de plus que la première." (Jean Loize, De Tahiti au Thibet, 44) En effet, les 16 poèmes inédits sont parus en pré-originale dans le numéro du Mercure de France du 16 décembre 1913.‎

Octavo, 215 x 136 mm, 328 pp., bound in half-calf buckram with red-ochre corners and colored boards, author's name and title in gilt with tailpiece motifs. Header edges. Folding map of the Rio de la Plata. Stamp of the library of the "Sociedade Brasileira de Cultura Inglesa" with book number and the mention "1959" in blue ballpoint pen on the back of the first page of the preface. Preface, table of contents, numerous illustrations throughout the book, and an index of subscribers. The binding is in excellent condition, the slightly yellowish-gray paper is intact and entirely legible. This book recounts the ill-fated second voyage of the Duff, a missionary ship en route to the South Sea Islands in 1798. It was only the second attempt at a missionary voyage to the Pacific. A year earlier, the Duff had successfully undertaken its first voyage, settling members of the London Missionary Society and their families on the islands of Tahiti, Tonga, and the Marquesas. However, this second attempt ended in disastrous failure. Captured first by a French privateer who mistook the Duff for a ship carrying Governor King to Australia, and then again by a Portuguese fleet, the group was forced to return to Lisbon, and William Gregory returned to England in 1800. William Gregory describes the details of his treatment in captivity, life in Spanish America (Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay), as well as indigenous life in the "enemy port" of Montevideo and the surrounding rich estuary of the Rio de la Plata, its "products, inhabitants, clothing, customs, commerce [and] religion." *************************************** Londres, T. Préface, table des matières, nombreuses illustrations tout au long du livre et index des souscripteurs. La reliure est en excellent état, le papier un peu jaune-gris intègre et entièrement lisible. Ce livre raconte le deuxième voyage malheureux du Duff, navire missionnaire en route vers les îles des mers du Sud en 1798. Ce n'était que la deuxième tentative de voyage missionnaire dans le Pacifique. Un an plus tôt, le Duff avait entrepris avec succès son premier voyage et abouti sur l'installation des membres de la London Missionary Society et de leurs familles sur les îles de Tahiti, de Tonga et les Marquises. En revanche, cette seconde tentative se soldera par un échec désastreux. Capturé d'abord par un corsaire français qui prit le Duff pour un navire emmenant le gouverneur King en Australie, puis une seconde fois par une flotte portugaise, le groupe fut contraint de retourner à Lisbonne et William Gregory regagnera l'Angleterre en 1800. William Gregory décrit les détails de son traitement en captivité, la vie en Amérique espagnole (Uruguay, Argentine, Paraguay) ainsi que la vie indigène dans le « port ennemi » de Montevideo et le riche estuaire environnant du Rio de la Plata, ses « produits, habitants, vêtements, coutumes, commerce [et] religion ».‎

"L'auteur souhaite ici présenter un aperçu de la position et de la condition du Brésil en général, pour habituer ceux qui le suivront dans ces pages à reconnaître les points qu'il va exposer à la suite de son expérience, en particulier concernant la machinerie des sujets commerciaux au Brésil... les hommes compétents pour parler du Brésil ont soit présumé que le public en savait presque autant qu'eux, et négligé des sujets très intéressants, en pensant qu'ils ne signifiaient pas grand-chose, et en parlant trop des trivialités de leur voyage personnel, ou au contraire ont appliqué un processus exhaustif pour parler de l'histoire et de la topographie avec un niveau de détail presque intolérable. ‎Rio de Janeiro, Primor Ltda, 1978. Reprint of the original 1852 edition. This is a giant folio set housed in a 56 x 38 cm clamshell box. The box is heavy and sturdy with a half-leather wine binding. Gilt engraving on the front board. Inside the box are: - a title page - the Dedication to the Prince Albert page - an English and Portuguese list of the plates - 25 colored plates, hand-numbered - a 26th plate, Serra da Estrela, numbered no. 20 - a booklet in Portuguese with "Notas Biographicas" about William Ouseley - a map of Obligado - the editor's Colofão in Portuguese all folio-sized, as well as an octavo (218 x 148 mm) hardcover wine cloth book, Bradel-style bound, in English and Portuguese, the title in each language being embossed on each cover. 118 pp. for the English part, 127 pp. for the Portuguese part. The book comments on each view. Some foxing on the inside of the box and the title page, which seems faded. The dedication page shows a bit less foxing and no fading at all. Plates are all in good condition as seen on pictures. Some slight folding on a few pages with no loss on the pictures. As for the book, it is well-bound and aside from a few foxing on the free white endpapers, title pages and some marginal foxing on a few pages margins, shows mostly clean, fresh pages. The giant folio box shows a few wear and tear. Marginal parts of the gilt design lack their color, with no damage to the box overall, it is quite sturdy.‎
