Sumptuous edition, accompanied by a translation and commentary in Italian by the Jesuit Father Antonio Maria Ambrogi (1713-1788). Each volume is introduced by a beautiful allegorical frontispiece dedicated to King Carlo Emanuele III of Savoy (by Marco Carloni), and the royal princes Vittorio Amedeo and Benedetto Maria Maurizio with their resp. portraits (by Francesco Barbazza resp. Ignazio Benedetti). This work is magnificently illustrated with engravings including two plates (vol. I with specimens of the manuscripts this edition is based on; vol. II with a geographical map with details of Italy and Greece) and about 142 large head and tailpieces depicting the most significant passages of the texts. In addition to its typographic appearance, the work is praised for the variants and comments by Ambrogi, who must also have closely supervised the illustration (see the depiction of the "baskets" on p. 233 of volume II). Bibliotheca Hedervaryana (bookplate), the library of Count K roly Khuen-H derv ry de H derv r (1849-1918), Hungarian politician and prime minister from 1910 to 1912. De Backer-Sommervogel I, 274-275. Brunet V, 1306. Graesse VI/2, 343; Dibdin II, pp. 558-559.
