‎Premier titre publié de Romain Gary dans cette collection. Les titres de la « Collection soleil » sont édités sous des reliures pleine toile de différentes teintes (rose, jaune, orange, bleu, vert...), relié dans une maquette de Massin. La collection reprend des livres du fonds, mais aussi des nouveautés tout juste parues. Elle a été créée en 1957, afin de concurrencer le Club du meilleur livre (société filiale de Gallimard et Hachette) : Claude Gallimard était hostile à l'idée qu'Hachette bénéficie de l'exploitation de son fonds en librairie sous forme de livres reliés. Le tirage est limité à quelques milliers d'exemplaires, avec cet argument publicitaire au lancement : « Le soleil, dit Fontenelle, est l'orgueil des planètes. Les livres de la collection "Soleil", tous au format in-8° soleil, seront l'orgueil de votre bibliothèque. » Treize titres de Romain Gary auront l'honneur d'y figurer : Lady L., La Promesse de l'aube, Les Mangeurs d'étoiles, La Danse de Gengis Cohn, La Tête coupable, Adieu Gary Cooper, Chien blanc, Europa, Les Enchanteurs, Au-delà de cette limite..., Clair de femme, Charge d'âme et Les Clowns lyriques. Il n'est pas dépassé que par Simone de Beauvoir (14 titres), Jean Giono (16) et Henry de Montherlant (22 !). ‎
