Sur les conseils éclairés de James Joyce, qui fut à Trieste le professeur d’anglais d’Italo Svevo, Benjamin Crémieux et Valéry Larbaud révèlent au public français ce géant des lettres italiennes. Cet « hyperconscient » doué d’humour est en effet un visionnaire pessimiste, et ces qualités font de Zeno un roman magistral qui introduit la psychanalyse « dans l’esthétique italienne » et le lecteur dans l’introspection d’un « inadapté » à l’inconscient facétieux, parachevé, loin de tout égotisme, par une méditation de moraliste sur l’essence du mal, rebelle à toute cure : « Ce n’est pas de la psychanalyse qu’il nous faudrait : sous la loi du détenteur du plus grand nombre d’engins, maladies et malades ne feront que croître et embellir. Peut-être reviendrons-nous à la santé grâce à une catastrophe sans précédent provoquée par les engins. […] Il y aura une explosion énorme que personne n’entendra et la terre, retournée à l’état de nébuleuse, errera dans les cieux, purgée de parasites et de maladies. » On le comprend, ce roman, injustement éclipsé et méconnu, tend un miroir à chaque lecteur et à chaque conscience horrifiée par les pouvoirs destructeurs de l’atome. Mark Manders - Zeno X Gallery, 28 Years of Collaboration offers an overview of the long-standing collaboration between artist Mark Manders ( 1968) and Zeno X Gallery in Antwerp. The publication appears on the occasion of his most recent solo exhibition at the gallery and highlights a number of important exhibitions and special projects for which Manders has been invited at home and abroad from the 1990s to the present. Since 1986, Mark Manders has been working on what he calls "self-portrait as a building". His oeuvre - consisting of installations, sculptures, works on paper and drawings - takes on the metaphor of a fictitious building, subdivided into separate rooms whose precise shape and size cannot be defined. There is no beginning and no end. Manders strives for timelessness and universality by using archetypal forms and familiar-looking materials such as clay, bronze and wood. Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven (b. 1951) has been working on a body of work consisting of drawings, paintings, collages, films and installations since the 1980s. She manipulates images depicting women ? first manually and later also digitally ? in order to question the objectification of women and the prevailing systems of power. In an intuitive and unconventional way, she explores subjects such as science, language and artificial intelligence, creating a universe of her own in which the oppositions between chaos and order, logic and mysticism, eroticism and technology are abolished.
