‎ L'ouvrage s'agrémente d'une abondante iconographie. ''Francis Bacon (1909-1992) est considéré à juste titre par beaucoup comme l'un des peintres majeurs de l'après-guerre. A partir de 1961, son atelier du 7 Reece Mews, dans le quartier de South Kensington à Londres, lui servit à la fois de domicile et de lieu de travail. Cette pièce devint, au fil des années, le réceptacle de milliers d'objets qui jouèrent un rôle décisif dans son art, et furent l'élément moteur d'un grand nombre de ses toiles les plus importantes. En 1998, John Edwards fit don de l'atelier, avec son contenu extraordinairement riche et resté intact depuis la mort de Bacon, à la Hugh Lane Gallery de la ville de Dublin. Après avoir été minutieusement démonté et reconstitué par une équipe d'archéologues et de conservateurs, il y est aujourd'hui exposé de façon permanente. Son démontage a mis au jour quelque 7500 objets. Parmi ceux-ci on a trouvé une multitude de photographies triturées, pliées ou déchirées, qui représentaient souvent les amis et les amants de Bacon ; des publications illustrées, notamment des livres et des articles de magazines sur des sujets aussi divers que la médecine, le sport, les animaux sauvages ou la guerre ; des dessins, des interventions sues à Bacon et des notes manuscrites ; des toiles découpées et sa dernière œuvre inachevée ; une foule de matériaux de peintre. Les murs eux-mêmes sont bariolés de peinture, car Bacon s'en servait comme d'une palette pour ses mélanges et ses essais. Avec ce livre, Margarita Cappock propose la première étude approfondie de l'atelier, en sélectionnant les éléments clés choisis dans la masse d'objets accumulés par Bacon et en les situant de façon concise dans le contexte de la vie et de la démarche de l'artiste. ‎In their different mediums, Henry Moore (1898-1986) and Francis Bacon (1909-1992) created unforgettable images of the human figure. The distinctive visual languages that each artist developed over more than half a century were marked by a growing simplicity and monumentality of form. Their perspective differed: Moore clung to a belief in humanism, while Bacon espoused a post-humanist, nihilistic view of the world. In expressing their visions of humanity, the two artists had very different approaches: Bacon working from the outside in, disintegrating and dissolving form; Moore from the inside out, pushing anatomical structure to the surface. If Bacon's images suggest flux, chance, and the arbitrariness of existence, Moore's sculptures have been interpreted as universal symbols of strength and endurance.Bacon and Moore first exhibited together in a group exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in London in which Bacon showed his Three Studies for Figures, at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944), propelling him into the limelight for the first time.
