‎In their different mediums, Henry Moore (1898-1986) and Francis Bacon (1909-1992) created unforgettable images of the human figure. The distinctive visual languages that each artist developed over more than half a century were marked by a growing simplicity and monumentality of form. Their perspective differed: Moore clung to a belief in humanism, while Bacon espoused a post-humanist, nihilistic view of the world. In expressing their visions of humanity, the two artists had very different approaches: Bacon working from the outside in, disintegrating and dissolving form; Moore from the inside out, pushing anatomical structure to the surface. If Bacon's images suggest flux, chance, and the arbitrariness of existence, Moore's sculptures have been interpreted as universal symbols of strength and endurance.Bacon and Moore first exhibited together in a group exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in London in which Bacon showed his Three Studies for Figures, at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944), propelling him into the limelight for the first time. Moore showed two sculptures from the1930s and fourteen wartime drawings, some of which anticipate the theme (though not the savage imagery) of Bacon's triptych.Exhibiting together in a commercial gallery was repeated twice in the 1960s, when Moore and Bacon were both represented by Marlborough Fine Art. These joint shows, extensively reviewed in the press, gave critics a chance to compare the artists' radical approaches to the human figure, which were seen as complementary rather than conflicting. Fifty years later, this publication once again brings their work into direct comparison.‎

Édition originale de la traduction française, due à Pierre Amboise, sieur de La Magdelaine, de l’ouvrage posthume de Francis Bacon publié en anglais sous le titre Sylva Sylvarum, or A Natural History. Cette version française, publiée à Paris par Antoine de Sommaville et André Soubron, constitue l’un des premiers moments importants de la réception française de la philosophie naturelle baconienne. WorldCat confirme l’édition parisienne de 1631 chez Sommaville et Soubron. L’ouvrage est d’un grand intérêt non seulement pour la diffusion en France de la méthode expérimentale de Bacon, mais aussi parce qu’il comprend, après le texte principal, un discours sur la vie de l’auteur, généralement présenté comme la première biographie imprimée de Bacon, ainsi que la première publication française de la New Atlantis, donnée ici sous le titre L’Atlas nouveau. Composée à partir de matériaux posthumes, l’Histoire naturelle rassemble de nombreuses observations et expériences relevant de la philosophie naturelle : métaux, or, feu, sons, musique, médecine, plantes, animaux, liquéfaction des corps, putréfaction, phénomènes occultes, esprit des corps, etc. Un chapitre est consacré au vin et à « l’yvrongnerie » pp. 241-253. La New Atlantis, utopie scientifique publiée pour la première fois en anglais avec Sylva Sylvarum en 1627, occupe ici les pages 419 à 567 sous le titre L’Atlas nouveau. Sous la forme d’un récit de voyage vers l’île de Bensalem, Bacon imagine une société organisée autour du progrès des sciences, de l’expérimentation et d’une institution savante, la Maison de Salomon. Le texte est souvent considéré comme l’une des grandes utopies scientifiques de l’âge moderne. Dos partiellement décollé, mouillure sans gravité sur les premiers feuillets qui disparaît progressivement, annotations anciennes sur une page de garde.
