Two albumen photographs of Paris Perspective de l'Avenue des Champs Elysées / Paris L'Opera.
Paris N.D. Photo / X. Photo. C1875 Deux superbes photographies sur papier albuminé représentant Paris, collées sur les deux faces d'un même carton rigide. Elles mesurent toutes deux 21 cm x 28 cm. L'une représente une vue des Champs-Élysées prise depuis le sommet de l'Arc de Triomphe. Une image nette et lumineuse, montrant une foule de voitures sur la route, avec des piétons sur les larges trottoirs latéraux. La vue s'estompe au loin. Une photographie nette et de bonne qualité. Le deuxième côté montre la façade de l'Opéra national avec des voitures, des omnibus et des piétons qui s'affairent. Ce qui est particulièrement intéressant dans cette photo, c'est que des lampadaires sont en cours d'installation devant l'Opéra. Cela nous permet de dater la photographie, car ils ont été installés à l'origine en 1875. Ils font partie de la « Ceinture de Lumière », un ensemble de 60 luminaires conçus par l'architecte Charles Garnier comme partie intégrante de l'extérieur de l'opéra lors de son ouverture le 5 janvier 1875. Une belle photographie, bien qu'un peu décolorée. La carte de support mesure 25,5 cm x 30,5 cm et présente quelques déchirures fermées sur les bords (qui n'affectent pas les tirages). La feuille a manifestement été retirée d'un album à un moment donné.
Two attractive albumen photographs of Paris, pasted onto two sides of the same piece of stiff card. Both are 21cm x 28cm. One is a view of the Champ Elysées taken from on top of the Arc de Triomphe. A good, clean and bright image, showing quite a crowd of carriages on the road, with pedestrians on the wide pavements to the side. The view fades into the distance. Clean and good photograph. The second side shows the front of the National Opera with carriages, omnibuses and pedestrians milling around. What is particularly interesting in this shot, is that the lamp posts are being installed in Front of the Opera. These enable us to date the photograph as they were originally installed in 1875. These form part of the "Ring of Light" (Ceinture de Lumière), a set of 60 lighting fixtures designed by architect Charles Garnier as integral to the opera house's exterior when it opened on January 5, 1875. A nice photograph, if slightly faded. The backing card is 25.5cm x 30.5cm and has a couple of closed tears to the edges. (not affecting the prints). The sheet has obviously been removed from an album at some point. .

S.P. S.P. 1983 Première édition. L'un des 35 exemplaires seulement (celui-ci portant le n° 14) de cette lithographie en couleurs de Carzou. Un exemplaire en bon état et très séduisant, en rouge et noir, imprimé sur papier jaune. Légers plis sur le papier rigide uniquement. Verso vierge. 515 × 395 mm (20Œ × 15œ pouces). Il semble y avoir eu trois variantes de cette estampe : « Opera I », en rouge sur papier blanc ; « Opera II », en turquoise sur papier blanc ; et celle-ci, « Opera III », en rouge sur papier jaune. C'est de loin la plus remarquable des trois, et apparemment la moins courante dans les ventes aux enchères. Jean Carzou (1907-2000).
First edition. One of only 35 copies (this being #14) of this coloured lithograph by Carzou. A clean, attractive item, in red and black, printed on yellow paper. A touch of light creasing to the stiff paper only. Blank to rear. 515 by 395mm (20Œ by 15œ inches). There seem to have been three variants of this print. Opera I, red on white paper. Opera II, turquoise on white paper. And this, Opera III, red on yellow. By far the most striking of the three, and seemingly the least common at auction. Jean Carzou (1907-2000). .
CAFE DE L'OPERA etc... Album Le Grand Monde à l'Envers
Paris 1919 Un joli pochoir coloré à la main extrait de l'"Album Le Grand Monde à l'Envers". (Deuxième série) publié en 1919. Sem a publié cet album immédiatement après la guerre. Lorsque la création de l'impôt sur le revenu avait terrifié les riches, Sem avait imaginé les grands et les bons de ce monde réduits à de petits métiers, chacun dans sa spécialité. Au Café de l'Opéra, deux messieurs en tenue de soirée exécutent des tours de "chasse au ballon". En contrebas, un grand homme surveille la plage à côté de sa bicyclette. À l'opposé, une dame loue des maillots de bain. On voit également un homme à vélo qui vend L'Avenir et un homme qui vend Le Gaulois. Belle impression. Les couleurs sont vives. (Ces pochoirs étaient imprimés avec de la couleur et finis à la main). Une bonne feuille, propre, avec de légères marques. 52 x 33 cm. Un exemplaire de cette estampe se trouve dans les merveilleux Musées de la ville de Paris. Inventaire : G.20661-1 SEM - Georges Goursat (1863-1934) était un caricaturiste français célèbre à la Belle Époque. Outre les caricatures qui l'ont rendu célèbre, il a créé des uvres d'un style très différent en tant que correspondant pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Ses uvres ultérieures ont été très influencées par "l'âge du jazz" et la haute société parisienne des années 1920.
A lovely hand coloured pochoir taken from the "Album Le Grand Monde à l'Envers." (Second series) Published in 1919. Sem published this album immediately after the war. When the creation of Income Tax had terrified the wealthy, Sem had imagined the great and the good of this world reduced to small jobs, each in his own speciality. In the Café de l'Opera, two gentleman in evening dress perform "hunt the ball" tricks. Below is a large man beside his bicycle, watching the beach. To the reverse, a lady is renting out bathing costumes. There is also a man on a bike selling L'Avenir and a gentleman selling Le Gaulois. Nice print. The colours are bright. (These pochoirs were printed with some colour and were hand finished). A good, clean sheet, slight marking only. 52 by 33 cm. A copy of this print is held in the wonderful Les Musées de la ville de Paris. Inventory: G.20661-1 SEM - Georges Goursat (18631934), was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. As well as the caricatures which made him famous, he created work in a very different style as a correspondent during World War I. His later work was very influenced by the "Jazz Age" and high society in Paris during the 1920's. .

Summary Was üblicherweise am Rande einer Ausgabe steht, rückt in den Mittelpunkt des vorliegenden Bandes: die praefationes zu den Basler Gesamtausgaben von drei prominenten Kirchenvätern der lateinischen Tradition (Ambrosius von Mailand, Augustinus von Hippo und Gregor der Große). In der frühen Neuzeit (bis ca. Mitte 16. Jh.) war Basel ein europaweit bekanntes Zentrum für die Buchproduktion und die Edition antiker und frühchristlicher Autoren. Die Vorreden bzw. Widmungsbriefe der Ausgaben dieser Schriftsteller beleuchten das geistlich und philologisch geprägte Interesse für die genannten Autoren, die in der Zeit des Humanismus und der Reformation wiederentdeckt und neu gelesen wurden. Diese praefationes sind kulturhistorisch aufschlussreiche und sprachlich oft kunstvoll gestaltete Paratexte. Summary Im Humanismus war Hieronymus, einer der vier Väter der lateinischen Kirche, für seine Gelehrsamkeit hoch geschätzt. Erasmus fühlte sich zu ihm besonders hingezogen: Dies schlägt sich am deutlichsten in den praefationes zu den drei Hieronymus-Gesamtausgaben nieder, die er von 1516 bis zu seinem Tod (1536) beim Basler Drucker Froben betreute. Im vorliegenden Band sind diese Vorreden (samt jenen der Frobenschen Ausgabe von 1553) chronologisch ediert, mit kritischem und Similien-Apparat sowie mit historisch-philologischen Anmerkungen versehen. Die Edition ergänzt jene der praefationes zu den anderen drei Vätern der lateinischen Kirche (Ambrosius, Augustinus und Gregor der Große), die ebenfalls im humanistischen Basel in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jh. erschienen sind (Basilea patristica, 2019). So bieten die beiden Bände die Textgrundlage für weiterführende Untersuchungen im Rahmen der Patristik, der neulateinischen Literatur und Philologie sowie der frühmodernen Kulturgeschichte an.
