A Amsterdam, Chez Marc-Michel Rey, 1776 (Paris, EDHIS, 1967). (12), 293, (3) pp. 8vo. Boards. Vercruysse 1776-A3; Naville 419; Thomas, Checklist, p. 76; Goldsmiths 11509; not in Kress or Einaudi. Reprint of the first edition of one of the rarest works by Holbach, with the errata. Published in a limited and numbered edition of 500 copies. Among other things, Holbach argues in this work that 'the social pact (between individual and the State) itself is based on the useful services that the individual and society are able to render to one another, and it remains valid only to the extent that its mutually benificial aims are fulfilled. Since, therefore, the legitimacy of any governement varies directly with the happiness of one and all living under it, Holbach proclaimed with courageous logic the people's right, if there were no other hope of assuring their welfare, to overthrow and replace their rulers. More specifically, Holbach proposed radical political and economic reforms for France in keeping with the ethocratic ideal. He advocated, as against the extremes of republicanism and enlightened despotism, a limited constitutional monarchy, in which intermediate parliamentary bodies would represent the interest of society and would maintain a balance between the opposing dangers of either popular or autocratic tyranny. He called for the abolition of the heriditary class privileges, ..... defended the principle of progressive taxation, ..... insisted on the complete separation of Church of State. Freedom of the press and of thought were to be inviolable ....'

Londres (Amsterdam, M.M. Rey), 1768. 2 volumes in 1. x, (2), 169 pp.; (4), 184 pp. 12mo. Early 19th-century calf, gilt and blind stamped borders on sides, spine gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, somewhat rubbed and worn, damage to head of spine. Vercruysse, 1768-A2; Thomas, Checklist, p. 75; Naville, p. 414; Peignot i, p. 180. First edition. The work was presented as a translation of a text by John Trenchard. First noticed in the Correspondance littéraire of 15 August 1768, condamned 'à être lacérée et brûlée' on 18 August 1770 and actually done the 20th. The 15 chapters of the work underline the desastrous role of religion, especially if tied to civil power ('pouvoir civil'). The religious morality is rejected in favour of a natural morality, contains also a profound statement in favour of tolerance as well as in favor of a lay society. The work belongs, with a group of other works such as Le Christiansisme dévoilée, Théologie portative, Lettres à Eugénie and Histoire critique de Jésus-Christ to the works in which the recurring theme is a vehement restatement of almost all the arguments for unbelief current in eighteenth-century France. - The binding of this work suggests that one holds a 19th century churchbook although the spine reads 'La Contagion Sacrée'.

Londres, 1773. 2 volumes in 1. vii, (1), 232 pp.; (4), 280 pp. 8vo. Contemporary catspaw calf, gilt triple fillets on sides, spine gilt in compartments, marbled edges. Vercruysse 1773-A2; Naville p. 418; Thomas, Checklist, p. 77; Kress 6940; Goldsmiths 10950; Higgs 5872; INED 2288; Einaudi A36. The rare first edition, collation identical with the one given by Vercruysse. The present work belongs with a number of other writings such as Le Bon-sens, Système social, Ethocratie and La Morale universelle to the texts in which Holbach developed at great length the ethical and political sections of his earlier published Système de la nature. His own term Ethocratie describes the gist of Holbachian political thought. The state, whose role is simply an extension of the social ethics of enlightened self-love, ought to nurture, in every possible way, the virtues of cooperation on which the good of society and the felicity of each of its members depend. The social pact itself is based on the useful services that the individual and society are able to render to one another, and it remains valid only to the extent that its mutually beneficial aims are fulfilled. Since, therefore, the legitimacy of any government varies directly with the happiness of one and all living under it, Holbach proclaimed with courageous logic the people's right, if there were no other hope of assuring their welfare, to overthrow and replace their rulers. - With bookplate on the front paste-down 'Robinson Crusoé', depicting a man with a rifle and a parasol in Africa.

First edition. Of this particular copy Vercruysse lists only one location, the private collection of Michel Bernstein. The book paginates identical with Vercruysse 1773-A2, but differs in collation. Vercruysse has not given priority to either of the two but the present edition is without doubt the rarer of the two. Londres, 1774. With engraved portrait as frontispiece. 2 volumes. (14), 397, (1) pp.; (4), 500, (4) pp. 8vo. Modern half morocco, spine gilt in compartments and with gilt lettering, marbled sides, top edge gilt. Vercruysse 1774-A5. - The portrait is added, not mentioned by Vercruysse. This is Holbach's most famous work (and in which he was very likely assisted by Diderot) and expounds a complete theorie of materialism.Holbach contributed some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his lifelong friend and colleague Denis Diderot. Diderot, d'Alembert, Helvetius, Voltaire and others of the philosophes met frequently for dinner and philosophical discussion at the Baron's house, which became known as 'the café of Europe' (among foreign visitors were Wilkes, Hume and Sterne). In the Système Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a desirable alternative. In fact he outlined a whole ethical and political philosophy, which he expanded in his later works.Holbach may not have been a great original thinker (his important ideas can already be found in predecessors such as Hobbes, Locke and La Mettrie), but by combining various elements in their thought and pressing it to the logical conclusion he reached the most extreme position in eighteenth-century free-thought. In fact, the present book caused a rift in the ranks of the philosophes, dividing them between deists and atheists, and even provoked Voltaire to reply in defense of religion. At the end of volume I has been bound: HELVETIUS, C.A. Londres 1774. 84, (3) pp.

Londres (Amsterdam, M.M. Rey), 1773. 3 volumes. viii, 218, (2) pp.; (4), 174, (2) pp.; (4), 166, (2) pp. 8vo. Contemporary tree calf, spines richly gilt with labels and gilt lettering. Vercruysse 1773-A4; Naville 419; Thomas, Checklist, 78; Kress S.4739; Goldsmiths 10952; Einaudi 2911; Higgs 5873; R. Darnton, The Corpus of Clandestine Literature in France, 1769-1789, 662. First edition. Paul-Henri Dietrich Thiery d'Holbach (1723-1789), the foremost exponent of atheistic materialism and the most intransigent polemicist against religion in the Enlightenment. On settling in Paris, Holbach had associated with the younger philosophes who, with Diderot, d'Alembert and Rousseau, were grouping around the Encyclopédie, to which he also became a major contributor. His Salon soon became the main social center, and a sort of intellectual headquarters, for the Encyclopedist movement. Among those attending were Diderot, Grimm, Helvétius, d'Alembert, Rousseau, Boulanger, Condillac, Naigeon, Turgot, and Condorcet. The Baron also counted among his acquaintances many foreigners, notably Hume, Gibbon, Smith, Priestley, Walpole, Garrick, Sterne, Beccaria and Franklin. It is little surprizing that Holbach was also known as le premier maître d'hôtel de la philosophie. Almost everything he wrote -whether because it expounded atheism and materialism, attacked Christianity, or castigated absolute monarchy, the state church, and feudal privilege- was highly subversive under the Ancien régime and could have exposed him to the most severe penalties. Consequently, his innumerable manuscripts were usually forwarded through secret channels to Holland for publication, after which the books were smuggled back into France.

Almost everything he wrote -whether because it expounded atheism and materialism, attacked Christianity, or castigated absolute monarchy, the state church, and feudal privilege- was highly subversive under the Ancien régime and could have exposed him to the severst penalties. Consequently, his innumerable manuscripts were usually forwarded through secret channels to Holland for publication, after which the books were smuggled back into France.

A Rome, 1775. 213, (3) pp. 8vo. Contemporary red morocco, gilt double fillet with ornamental gilt border on sides, spine gilt with raised bands, green morocco label with gilt letering, all edges gilt. Vercruysse 1775-A7; d'Holbach et ses Amis, 1574; Pfälzische Landesbibliothek, Katalog zur Ausstellung 1989, 38; Naville 413; Thomas, Checklist, 78; Le Bûcher Bibliographique, 761; Peignot, i, 117; Darnton, The Corpus of Clandestine Literature in France, 1769-1789, 676. First published in 1768, in which year it saw two new editions as well, condamned in 1776 to be flogged and burnt. Attribution has been made to Dulaurens and Voltaire but nowadays the book is generally acknowledged to have been written at least for the major part by Holbach. - A beautiful copy of this interesting and quite scarce work.

Satisfaisant
