‎On Day 1 of the Belgian lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic Beno t van Innis made a drawing with a black felt-tip pen on an A4 sheet. He sent the drawing to some friends?most of them from the art world?by mail and WhatsApp. On Day 2 of the lockdown, he made a second drawing and again he sent it to his friends and acquaintances. The response was overwhelmingly positive. The drawings were shared on social media and dS Weekblad published an interview and five drawings. The protagonist in these drawings is the artist himself, who reacts to the exceptional situation departing from his own universe. The book Instant Light compiles the entire series of drawings Beno t made in his studio in Brussels. They feature all his favourite subjects: painting, Club Brugge, literature, the world of art and French chanson. The book is published by Posture Editions in a co-production with Be-Part Kortrijk/Waregem, Hof van Busleyden Mechelen and Berg Institute Madrid. The publication is a collection of unique drawings that constitute a personal account of this unprecedented period in our history. It?s as if these stylishly elegant and sometimes virtuoso drawings instantly brighten up this dark page; they also provide an ideal diversion from the countless bad tidings we?re confronted with every day. Beno t van Innis (b. 1960) studied painting with Dan Van Severen at Sint-Lucas in Ghent. Shortly after graduating his drawings were published in De Morgen and De Standaard der Letteren. Since 1989, he has drawn 31 covers for The New Yorker. Beno t is widely known for the eight portraits he created for the tiled walls in the Brussels metro station Maalbeek. ‎Erste Ausgabe. Seltene Beschreibung einer Reise durch die Schweiz, in deren Mittelpunkt u.a. Höhenmessungen mit dem Barometer standen, ferner Bemerkungen über Bevölkerung, Wirtschaft und Industrie (Uhren) sowie Begegnungen mit bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten (Pestalozzi). Dazu Stadtbeschreibungen. So heisst es im 17. Brief: „Welch ein Abstand zwischen dem regen protestantischen Bern und dem todten katholischen Freyburg“ (damals mit 6000 Einwohnern). Auch sonst erfährt man nur Negatives über Freiburg und seine Frauen. die in hässlicher Kleidungstracht herumlaufen und das Haar flechten, „in zwei ungeheuer dicke Flechten mit Flachs ausgestopft, wodurch sie ein narrisches abenteurliches Ansehen erhalten.“ In der Stadt werde ausser schlechtem Deutsch und Französisch noch eine Volksprache gesprochen, die man nicht versteht (cf. Interlibrum. Buchantiquar Walter Alicke schreibt in seinem Katalog 281, n° 48: „Seine Beschreibungen sind auch heute noch mit grossem Genuss zu lesen“. Weitere Stationen am Genfer See, Vevey, Wallis usw. Im 22. Brief (v. insges. 34) findet sich eine interessante Beschreibung: Der Autor sitzt in einem Wirtshaus in Iverdün (Yverdon) und liest „Corinne“ von Frau von Stael. „Als ich eben den dritten Theil geendigt, kam die Verfasserin angefahren, sie kehrte von Paris nach Coppet zurück... Mit Friedrich Schlegel, welcher Frau von Stael begleitete, habe ich noch ein angenehmes Viertelstündchen verplaudert...“ Seite 211 verbunden. Wohlerhalten. ‎De Nederlandse kunstenaar Berend Strik verkent de relatie tussen de creatieve ruimte en de esthetische concepten via de studio's van internationale hedendaagse kunstenaars. Zijn project begon in Marcel Duchamps atelier in Manhattan, een architecturale ruimte waarvan het gebruik mettertijd is gewijzigd maar waar de herinneringen levendig blijven. In de loop der jaren werd dit eerste bezoek gevolgd door vele andere, onder meer aan de ateliers van Jackson Pollock en Lee Krasner, van John Baldessari, Martha Rosler en Henry Taylor, of de performatieve ruimte van Melati Suryodarmo en de conceptuele ruimten van James Lee Byars. Strik fotografeert deze ruimten, vergroot ze en drukt ze af voordat hij het oppervlak bestikt en er kleuren en tactiele stoffen aan toevoegt om die delen van het beeld te beklemtonen die hij belangrijk acht. Hij eigent zich het onderwerp van de kunstenaar toe en vervormt de realiteit ervan. Door nieuwe lagen aan te brengen voegt hij informatie toe, geeft hij het onderwerp een persoonlijke interpretatie en maakt hij er zijn eigen werk van. Hij spitst zich vooral toe op de mythe van het kunstenaarsatelier, de historisch bevoorrechte ruimte voor artistieke creativiteit en de onmogelijke belofte van een blik in de geest van de kunstenaar.
