‎Summary The Abbaye du Saint Esprit was a successful work of vernacular spiritual advice for women, surviving in sixteen manuscripts and a widely copied Middle English translation. Unlike many other didactic religious texts, it offers few prescriptions for behaviour; rather, it instructs the reader to build a convent of virtues in her conscience and uses the allegorical structure of the building and its inhabitants to arrange brief teachings on prayer and virtuous practice. Between its genesis in the last quarter of the thirteenth century to its final development towards the end of the fifteenth, it was reworked several times for new audiences of women both lay and cloistered, bourgeois and aristocratic. The examination of these successive adaptations offers insights into the growth of lay religious culture, the participation of women in new religious movements, and the use and transformation of twelfth and early thirteenth-century monastic formation literature for new audiences. ‎Summary Like other Jewish works from the late Second Temple period, Psalms of Solomon alludes constantly to passages in Scripture?particularly the Pentateuch, the Prophetic books and Psalms. Gathering all passages where the Psalms of Solomon refer to a specific verse in Scripture, the present monograph ventures to analyze the authors' use of Scripture and to identify the textual tradition underlying the allusions. The conclusion this leads to is that the authors used a Greek version, close to the Septuagint but sporadically revised on the basis of the proto-Masoretic Hebrew text. This conclusion agrees with recent research on revisionary work on the Septuagint, which must have begun in the first century BCE, long before the named recensions of the second century CE (Aquila, Symmachus, Theodotion). The textual analysis casts a new light on the Psalms of Solomon. Although they came into being in Jerusalem in the aftermath of Pompey's conquest of the city in 63 BCE, they were not composed in Hebrew, but in Greek. The identity of the Greek-speaking group that produced the Psalms of Solomon, and their religious views, are discussed in the final chapter of this monograph. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 1. ‎The ethnographic literature of the 20th century focused mainly on the sculptural traditions of the numerous ethnic groups that populated Southern Nigeria while the more northern areas remained largely terra incognita. In 2013 Jan Strybol published a study on the sculpture of Northern Nigeria. He pointed out that in many parts of this region there are peoples who still had, at least until recently, their own sculptural tradition. In the present study the author restricted himself to what is referred to as the Middle Belt and especially to the part between the Bauchi Plateau, the Gongola River and the Katsina Ala River. In 1974 Roy Sieber pointed out that, with a few exceptions, the peoples who were members of the Niger-Congo language family laid the foundations for the great African sculptural traditions south of the Sahara. However, the largest group of iconophile peoples in the Central Middle Belt of Nigeria is to be found in the Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family.‎

‎Dit overzicht van de geschiedenis van Fort Rammekens verschijnt precies 475 jaar nadat men in 1547 met de bouw begon. Toentertijd was het een van de eerste moderne vestingen met bastions in Nederland. Het fort zou niet alleen het eiland Walcheren en de toegang tot de haven van Middelburg beschermen, maar ook de Schelde als poort tot Vlaanderen en Brabant; de economische motor en het bestuurscentrum van het Habsburgse Rijk moesten immers tegen Frankrijk worden verdedigd. De eeuwen erna zou Fort Rammekens verschillende functies vervullen. In de tachtigjarige oorlog was het van essentieel belang voor de controle over Walcheren. De Rede van Rammekens vormde vanaf de Middeleeuwen de belangrijkste havenplaats van het eiland. Als verdediging tegen de Engelsen in de vroeg-negentiende eeuw werd het door Napoleon grondig verbouwd, om tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog op last van de Duitse bezetter in een verdedigingslinie tegen de geallieerden op te gaan. Nu heeft Fort Rammekens vooral betekenis als monument van geschiedenis, kunst en natuur. Een cultuurpodium en toeristische attractie in een bijzonder gebied. Staatsbosbeheer ? sinds 1972 eigenaar van het fort ? lost met het verschijnen van dit boek een belofte in: het publiektoegankelijk maken van de onderzoeksgegevens uit de periode 2011-2013 waarin Fort Rammekens een uitgebreide consolidatie onderging.
