‎De schilder Jo Delahaut is een van de spilfiguren van de geometrische abstractie in Belgi . Hij volgt zijn opleiding aan de Luikse academie waar hij ook een doctoraat in de kunstgeschiedenis behaalt (1939). Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog is zijn werk nog figuratief. Na een tentoonstelling in Charleroi (1942) maakt hij zijn eerste abstracte werken. Binnen de groep van La Jeune Peinture Belge is hij in 1947 de enige vertegenwoordiger van abstracte kunst. In 1946 wordt hij lid van R alit s Nouvelles in Parijs. Onder invloed van het werk van Auguste Herbin evolueert hij meer en meer naar de geometrische abstractie. In 1952 richt hij samen met o.a. Pol Bury, Jean Milo, Georges Collignon en Albert Saverys Art Abstrait op. Vervolgens richt Delahaut Art abstrait-Formes (1956) en Art Construit (1960) op. In samenwerking met de prestigieuze Pinacoteca di Siena en het Franse Musee des Beaux-Arts de Rouen worden in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten een tachtigtal bijzonder verfijnde meesterwerken getoond die maar zelden hun thuishaven verlaten. Ze getuigen van de revolutionaire kunst die tussen het eind van de 13e en het eind van de 15e eeuw beoefend werd door o.a. de gebroeders Lorenzetti, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini en Sano di Pietro, die vernieuwden door perspectief in hun schilderijen te introduceren, het landschap als achtergrond in te voeren en een innoverend kleurenpalet te gebruiken. Dit laatste wordt niet langer gezien als een gesloten en stabiele entiteit, maar veeleer als een flexibel projectiescherm, dat toelaat om fundamentele vragen te stellen over representatie, identiteit en de relatie tussen de geslachten. In plaats van een onveranderlijk biologisch gegeven, is het lichaam voortaan een sociale constructie, die we moeten bekijken doorheen het prisma van diverse ensceneringen in bepaalde historische en culturele contexten.
