The Royal Museum for Central Africa was founded in 1898, but its current building was inaugurated in 1910 and is characterised by many symbols reflecting the colonial propaganda of the time. The grand rotunda, designed to serve as the museum entrance, plays host to a series of statues that are strong examples of such imagery, reflecting fundamentally racist stereotypes. Between 2013 and 2018, the RMCA underwent a major renovation that saw a substantial redesign of the permanent exhibition, with the involvement of members of the African diaspora in Belgium. A major challenge of the renovation was to demonstrate the will to decolonise a listed building that is legally protected against changes. As removal of the colonial statues was not allowed, the museum was forced to find innovative solutions, notably by inviting contemporary African artists to create installations to dialogue, contrast, and discuss with colonial messages. Congolese artist Aimé Mpane was chosen to make such an installation in the rotunda in 2018 with New breath, or Burgeoning Congo. Public reaction helped the AfricaMuseum realise that it needed to go further. Along with the creation of a second sculpture, Aimé Mpane, in co-creation with Belgian artist Jean Pierre Müller, proposed the RE/STORE project: a permanent installation of transparent veils, each bearing a contemporary message, hung in front of every statue in the rotunda. The themes addressed in this collection of veils interact with the viewer in a powerful and eloquent manner. This richly illustrated book is a compilation of texts written by renowned experts about the history of the rotunda and its statues, as well as the semantic and artistic analysis of RE/STORE, providing a full catalogue of the installations, sculptures, and veils.

Summary This book honours the achievements of Marco Mostert, professor of Medieval History at Utrecht University. Marco has been one of the main promotors and proponents of the expanding field of studies in medieval literacy and orality. The book celebrates his legacy by focusing on communication and writing in the Middle Ages, themes central to Marco's interest. It is divided into two sections. Part I covers the early medieval period, focusing on manuscripts and texts, mainly those produced by clerics. Articles in this section include studies on the liturgical hymn Te Deum; Carolingian political hegemony in Frisia; a new Carolingian witness of Suetonius's Life of Caesars; the Utrecht Psalter and its historical context; monastic socialization; political communication through sermons; manuscript annotations at Fleury-sur-Loire; Ademar of Chabannes's final years; and the semantic field of communicatio. Part II shifts focus to written communication in broader societal layers in the later medieval period, when writing became significant for other societal groups like townsfolk and peasants. Articles in this section discuss a case of identifying a thief through written documents; urban literacy in Danish and Hungarian towns; graffiti in Abruzzi churches; the cartulary of Egmond monastery; and literate culture among late medieval countryside inhabitants. Friends, collaborators, colleagues, and former students of Marco have contributed to this volume, with all authors discussing different aspects of the use of the written word in various parts of the medieval European world. The result is a book with multiple facets, collectively contribute to a deeper understanding of medieval literacy and its societal implications.

The first book of visual identities, photographs, typefaces, books, films, posters, and installations by Akatre. The visual identities, installations, and Edited byial designs of French design agency Akatre are marked by bold swaths of color, elaborate photographic still lifes, and striking re-appropriations of everyday objects. Zero to Five is the first book to showcase Akartre?s distinctive and experimental visual creations, which cross fluidly between photography, graphic and web design, art, and typography. Founded in 2007 and comprising Julien Dhivert, Sébastien Riveron, and Valentin Abad, and now one of the most coveted studios in Paris, Akatre takes on projects that require an involved and all-encompassing design approach. Because Akatre does typography, layout, photography, and video themselves, their work requires strong personal and emotional involvement, thereby turning each project into a personal exploration and a part of the studio?s evolution. Much of Akatre?s designs are manifested as photographs of subject matter involving elaborate balancing acts, everyday objects exaggerated in multiplicity or left hovering in space, delicate bodily extensions, and the occasional wild animal. Color and geometry are tightly controlled, every detail is carefully considered. Zero to Five features both non-commissioned work and work designed for clients in art, culture, music, fashion, and luxury fields. Akatre?s past clients include Mains d?OEuvres, a multidisciplinary contemporary art venue; TU-Nantes, a cutting-edge performance space at the University of Nantes; Foundation Cartier, Cartier?s contemporary art center in Paris; and Para One & Tacteel, a French electronic music duo.

Nobuyoshi Araki is arguably Japan's greatest living photographer, and certainly its most controversial. The more than 300 books he has published over the last four decades attest to his inexhaustible creative energy, while his work, which often challenges social taboos surrounding sex and death, has drawn critical attention both at home and abroad. This major publication provides the most comprehensive overview yet of Araki?s highly prolific forty-year career. Araki?s key series of works are included alongside many new and previously unpublished photographs.
