Summary Translation and the Rediscovery of Rhetoric presents a diachronic case study of how translation is the means by which rhetoric, as the art of reasoning, becomes a part of a lineage of - and a resource for - an ethics of civic discourse. It shows how translation (as practice and as theory, via the medieval topos of translatio as the transfer of knowledge) serves as the vehicle for the transfer of rhetoric as an art of argumentation and persuasion from classical Greece and Rome to modern Paris and Brussels by way of medieval France and Italy. This study explores a significant and quite specific transmission of rhetorical thought. Beginning with the Roman orator Cicero it proceeds to the medieval Italian notary, philosopher, and statesman Brunetto Latini, whose translations of Cicero's De inventione would plant the seeds for the renewal of rhetoric as an art of persuasion and radically change the fate of rhetoric in the twentieth century in the work of the French literary critic Jean Paulhan and the Belgian philosophers Cha m Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca. In so doing, Translation and the Rediscovery of Rhetoric serves to underscore the importance of medieval culture to contemporary thought by studying not only how knowledge was transmitted from antiquity to modernity by means of translation, but also by revealing how the Middle Ages made an essential and traceable contribution to modern rhetorical studies.

Target, who made a major contribution to the wording of the 1791 Constitution, he was one of the prime movers in the national patriot party in 1788-1789 and he contributed notably to the Constituent Assembly's legal, constitutional and administrative reforms. - A very nice and well preserved collection.This Mirabeau was the younger brother of the famous Mirabeau and member of the National Assembly. He emigrated to Germany in 1790 where he formed the famous legion of the "hussards de la mort." He received the nickname of "Tonneau" due to his being often drunk. Reproached by his brother he answered: "What are you complaining about ? Of all the possible vices of the family you have left me only this one!"

The Faces of the Other studies the perception of otherness, whether other peoples or religions, the Later Roman Empire, from the first until the fifth century CE. The foundations of European civilization as we know it today were laid in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. The Faces of the Other: Religious Rivalry and Ethnic Encounters in the Later Roman World traces the roots of the attitudes and argumentation about religious or ethnic otherness in modern western culture. It aims at deepening the historical understanding of attitudes towards otherness as well as cultural and religious conflicts in world history. The Faces of the Other discusses the conceptions, depictions, and attitudes towards the other in Graeco-Roman antiquity. The book focuses on the perception of otherness, whether other peoples or religions, in the Later Roman Empire as understood broadly, from the first until the fifth century CE. These others are ethnic others such as the Persians, Huns, and the Germanic peoples were to Romans, or religious others such as Jews were to Christians or Christians to Jews, Christians to pagans or pagans to Christians, or different cults to the 'mainstream' Romans, or different Christian sects to each other. Dr Maijastina Kahlos teaches at the Helsinki Collegium of Advanced Studies.
