This led him to study invariant theory and he found a reciprocity law relating to binary forms. With his understanding of quadratic forms and invariant theory he created a theory of transformations in 1855. His results on this topic provided connections between number theory, theta functions, and the transformations of abelian functions.""""Hermite’s 1855 results became basic for the transformation theory of Abelian functions as well as for Camille Jordan’s theory of ""Abelian"" groups. They also led to Herrnite’s own theory of the fifth-degree equation and of the modular equations of elliptic functions.""(DSB).

Au botaniste français Eugène Bourgeau (1813-1877). Lettre en français, retranscrite avec les petites erreurs de Watson qui s'en excuse en fin de lettre : « Monsieur ! Ayez la bonté d'envoyer le paquet de vos plantes espagnoles par chemin de fer, adressé à moi dans la manière indiquée ci-dessus. Ajoutez sur la suscription ces mots "Botanical Specimens". Sir William Hooker souhaite que vous envoyez aussi son paquet de vos plantes ensemble avec le mien. Envoyez-vous un paquet de mêmes plantes à M. C. Lemann de Londres ? Ainsi, les trois paquets peuvent venir ensemble dans une boite. Pouvez-vous expliquer de quelle manière vous préférerez de recevoir de l'argent pour payement ? M. Kralik (rue d'Enfer N°45) m'envoyera un paquet des plantes de Corse dans le janvier. Voulez-vous avoir la bonté d'aller chez lui, et de demander si il puisse envoyer son paquet ensemble avec les vos dans une boite. Rarement j'essaie écrire votre langue. Pardonnez toutes les erreurs, je vous prie. Et recevez l'assurance, Monsieur, des mes respects &c. Hewett C. Watson ». La lettre mentionne donc William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865), Charles Morgan Lemann (1806-1852), autres botanistes anglais et Jean-Louis Kralik (1813-1892), autre botaniste français. Petit manque de papier mangeant une lettre, dû au cachet qui fermait le courrier. Beau courrier, rare lettre en français. [133]

In recent decades, historians attempting to understand the transition from the world of late antiquity with its unitary imperial system to the medieval Europe of separate kingdoms have become increasingly concerned with the role of early medieval gentes, or peoples, in the end of the former and the constitution of the latter. Eleven specialists examine here the role of ethnic identity in the formation of medieval polities on the periphery of the Frankish world in the eighth through eleventh centuries. In particular, they explore the intertwined issues of ethnic identity and state formation in Scandinavia and in the western and southern Slavic regions, areas in which the new approaches to the history of ethnicity have but little penetrated traditional scholarship. They ask to what extent common identities assisted in the consolidation and creation of early medieval kingdoms and to what extent the formation of these kingdoms created a discourse of common identity as a means to centralization and control. The authors contend that the developments in Scandinavia and in Slavic areas cannot be understood except in dynamic relationship with the process of state formation and group identity within the Frankish kingdoms. This powerful, expansionist society not only interacted and influenced the development of state structures on its northern and eastern borders, but it also provided models of discourse about the relationship between centralizing power and group solidarity. Not that these discourses were simply adopted by the Franks? neighbours, but rather they became part of the range of possible options selectively adapted to local circumstances. Languages : English.
