‎---- PREMIERE EDITION FRANCAISE ---- "Boltzmann, (1844/1906), est le principal créateur de la théorie cinétique des gaz qui, avec lui et après lui, devait s'élargir en une mécanique statistique. S'appuyant sur les travaux de Clausius et sur ceux de Maxwell, il aboutit notamment, en 1872, à la définition d'une fonction, H, caractéristique de l'état d'un gaz enfermé dans un récipient, fonction qui ne peut que décroître, s'apparentant par là à l'entropie, au signe près. Mais l'apport le plus notable de Boltzmann réside dans l'introduction du concept de probabilité des états macroscopiques d'un gaz, qu'il mesure par le nombre des "complexions" microscopiques de ce gaz correspondant à chaque état. Cela le conduit en 1876 à une expression de l'entropie d'un gaz, dite formule de Boltzmann, équivalente, à une constante près, au logarithme de la probabilité de l'état du gaz et, plus généralement, d'un système.
