‎ Première édition. Scheuchzer est sans doute le premier à avoir compris que les fossiles étaient les restes d'organismes vivants. Il avait commencé une collection de fossiles dès 1690, qui devint vite célèbre et le mis en contact du monde savant. Il a étudié une grande variété de fossiles et peut être considéré comme le père de la paléontologie européenne. Illustré par 5 belles planches dépliantes gravées de poissons fossiles. Scheuchzer (1672-1733) was the first to understand that fossils were the remains of organic beings and presented the fish themselves as making this case. The fossil collection that Scheuchzer began assembling in 1690 soon became famous and brought Scheuchzer to the attention of the scholarly world. Vollständiges Exemplar.Er behandelt unter anderem die Naturgeschichte, Paläontologie und Gletscherkunde, die Scheuchzer hiermit begründete und entwickelte, u.a. die später von Agassiz ausgeführte Dilatationstheorie der Gletscher. Er machte auf Einschlüsse in Kristallen aufmerksam, die er für eine Theorie der Genesis der Kristalle benutzt.Als erster bereiste Scheuchzer mit mathematischen und physikalischen Instrumenten die gefürchteten und bisher als völlig unzugänglich geltenden Natur-Riesen der Schweiz. Nutting after Melchior Fusslinus, plus 41 plates including 2 folding, plate VII in the second journey has a small circle hand coloured blue depicting the earth in the middle of mists and clouds as called for, pages: [6],1-57; [1], 1-72; [2],1-22, bound in full recent panelled calf, blind stamped decoration to covers, richly gilt spine, raised bands and gilt lettered morocco label, red speckled edges and new endpapers. Plate 1 in the third part has top margin trimmed, not affecting image, blank side of first portrait has pale age-browning and is slightly dusty, and last plate has some light foxing to blank side, blank sides of most plates slightly dusty, 1 plate has paper fault to lower margin, neatly repaired, no loss, occasional very slight light browning, small loss from upper corner of 1 text page, not affecting page number or text. A very good clean tight copy of the first edition complete with all 44 plates and the portrait. Johann Jacob Scheuchzer (1672-1733) was a Swiss scholar, a mathematician and naturalist and a doctor of medicine. He was a correspondent and friend of Isaac Newton and a Fellow of the Royal Society to whom at Newton's suggestion this work was dedicated. Newton's imprimatur appears on the title page and the engraved plates were executed at the expense of Newton, whose name appears on the 3 engraved dedication plates, and other Royal Society members such as Hans Sloane and Edmund Halley, plus other prominent university men. Scheuchzer was one of greatest Alpine tourists of his day and in this work describes his observations during 3 journeys made in 1702, 1703 and 1704. The 3 dedication plates and many others show views from his journeys including geological formations, others depict botanical and geological specimens, and equipment. See: Grace K. Importantes Notions de botanique, comprenant le texte fondamental de Schleiden, Beiträge zur Phytogenesis (p. 121-159), publié à l'origine dans les Archiv für Anatomie, Physiologie und wissenschaftliche Medicin, 1838 (pp 137-76), et par lequel le savant allemand contribua à démontrer, avec Theodor Schwamm, que la cellule est l'unité de base du vivant. "After [Robert Brown], Schleiden, in his 'Contributions to Photogenesis', taking the embryonic cell as his starting-point proceeded to attempt a reconstruction of the develepment of the cell. He went seriously astray in this but he insisted on the independance of the cell and presented for the first time the notion that a plant, for exemple, is a community of cells" (PMM). "Schleiden demonstrated that plant tissues are made up of and developed from groups of cells, of which he recognized the 'cycloblast' or cell-nucleus" (DSB). L'article fut immédiatement traduit en français et en anglais et réimprimé dans les présents mélanges de botanique. Matthias Jacob Schleiden (1804-1881) étudia le droit à l'université d'Heidelberg et exerça à Hambourg avant d'abandonner la profession en 1833 pour se consacrer l'étude de l'histoire naturelle à l'université de Göttingen puis à Berlin, où résidaient alors Robert Brown et Alexander von Humboldt. Schleiden travailla auprès de Johannes Müller dans son laboratoire de physiologie ; il y fit la rencontre de Theodor Schwann, avec qui il contribua à élaborer la théorie cellulaire Cachet et étiquette ex-libris de l'Institut catholique de Paris.
