Summary This work shows how the importance of Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday in the 364-day Qumran calendar is based on the Priestly creation narrative in Genesis and the myth of a cosmic covenant established between God and the angels on the first day. The myth of the apostasy of the angels guiding the seven planets was used to explain the discrepancy between the 364-day calendar and observation. The Epistle of Jude makes it possible to situate this work in relation to both Jubilees and the Book of the Watchers and confirms the use of the 364-day calendar in the earliest years of the nascent Church.

This volume offers a critical edition and translation of one of Richard Rolle?s final Latin writings, together with an extensive historical introduction, notes, and commentary. Rolle works carefully through each word and phrase of the nine passages from Job read in Matins in the Office of the Dead, showing how Job?s words could and perhaps should be read and prayed by a true contemplative. By turns preacherly and scholarly, precise and powerfully affective, with frequent recourse to the rapturous experiences of divine love that are now considered the hallmarks of Rolle?s mysticism, this late work made the hermit?s own preparation for death available for reflection and emulation. This work?s influence on the educated English clergy in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries made it a major contributor to Christian attitudes toward death and dying in the later medieval English Church. The world of Byzantine liturgical book types is fascinating but also confusing. While they are central to the study and celebration of Byzantine Liturgy, no one work offers an overview of their history, contents, and structure. This volume offers for the first time an introduction to the major types of Byzantine liturgical books, their taxonomy, origins, development, and contents.
