Dit boek is een liefdevolle poging tot reconstructie van de beleving van de kerkgangers in het verloren gegane interieur van de Antwerpse Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, vanaf het midden van de vijftiende eeuw tot aan de Beeldenstorm (1566). Een verblufte Albrecht D rer bezong in 1521 de wonderlijke akoestiek van de Antwerpse Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (kathedraal sinds 1559) en noteerde in zijn reisdagboek dat de moederkerk zo ontzettend groot is ?dat er veel missen tegelijk kunnen gezongen worden, zonder dat de een de ander hindert?. Maar enkele decennia later jeremieerde vermoedelijk Roger de Tassis, de tiende deken van de Antwerpse kerk, in een klachtenbrief over het onaangename klanklandschap ten gevolge van het ?rondwandelen in de kerk, tijdens de preek en de goddelijke diensten, hetgeen hier zo erg is dat sommige vreemdelingen die het zien, er om wenen? (1548/9). Papebrochius noteerde dan weer in zijn omvangrijke geschiedschrijving dat ?door de gewoonte om dagelijks de graven te openen om er lijken in te leggen, het [in de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal] bijna altijd gevaarlijk was voor hen die zich zwaar of niet goed voelen; zozeer zelfs dat vele minder sterke lieden een afkeer hadden om naar de parochiekerken te gaan, vooral zwangere vrouwen? (zeventiende eeuw). Deze en vele andere terloopse opmerkingen van iedereen die de Antwerpse Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk binnenliep, worden voor het voetlicht gebracht. De verloren gegane pre-Tridentijnse aankleding van het interieur vormt het dynamische decor voor de zintuiglijke waarnemingen van de clerus en de stedelingen. Door de waarnemingen te relateren aan de breed verspreide kennis over het sensorium, wordt de gepercipieerde impact van de ervaringen in een groter, begrijpelijk geheel gebracht. Dit onderzoek beoogt geen exhaustieve en objectieve inventaris van de sociale interacties en de rituele handelingen in de laatmiddeleeuwse parochiekerk. Wel worden deze quasi anekdotische gegevens en subjectieve getuigenissen gebruikt om meer te achterhalen over de fysieke en spirituele beleving van de zogenaamde kerkelijke middengroepen tijdens de eeuw voor de Beeldenstorm. Dit paradigma wordt vervolgens gedissecteerd met het oog op de vertalingen naar de gebruikerscontext, de typologie en de iconografie van de liturgische objecten die in het gebouw circuleerden. Onderbelicht gebleven ornamenta sacra fungeren zo als onontgonnen spoor naar de documentaire waarde van het laatmiddeleeuwse beeld en het complex van religieuze overtuigingen onder de kerkgangers. Het proefschrift, dat de basis vormde voor deze publicatie, ontving de Prijs Vlaanderen voor Geschiedkundige Wetenschappen 2023, de Mgr. Charles De Clercq-prijs 2022 en de Olbrechts Prijs 2021. Summary The articles in this book encompass a broad historical panorama and consider the presence of litanic prayers and songs in different religions, beginning with written records in the Egyptian, Sumerian and Hebrew languages and finishing with Christian works from diverse denominations. Summary The book revolves around some of the most important relics of Christendom ? chief among them the Crown of Thorns ? and the ways in which they became, effectively, personal objects of devotion, notwithstanding their ostensibly universal appeal. It was France that laid claim to the Passion and other relics in the middle of the thirteenth century in a campaign that involved the construction of a new magnificent chapel ? the Sainte-Chapelle ? designed specifically to display the relics, and the composition of new liturgies to celebrate and focus attention on them. As inert objects, relics could not accomplish much without being 'activated' one way or the other, whether in prose, poetry, paintings, statues, or in music. It is these modes of activation that endowed the substance of relics with identity and meaning that made them so powerful and effective. The liturgies studied in this book were some of the most critical mechanisms of activation; they enabled the power of the Sainte-Chapelle relics, articulated the nature of that power, and proclaimed it far and wide. Nowhere is this more evident than in the sequences memorializing these relics, which were chiefly cultivated and championed at the Sainte-Chapelle. This book examines these sequences, and the ways in which they give prominence to the underlying agenda of the French monarchy by promoting and naturalizing the notion of sacral kingship, rooted in biblical kingship.
