‎Le sculpteur Pierre Sabatier (1925-2003) a voue l'essentiel de sa carriere a l'edification d'un art monumental et collectif, en marge de tout circuit commercial. Forme apres la guerre a l'Ecole nationale superieure des arts decoratifs puis aux Beaux-Arts de Paris, il realise des mosaiques et des ceramiques avant de s'orienter, a la fin des annees 1950, vers le metal, qui devient son materiau de predilection. Adherant en 1966 au mouvement ? Le Mur vivant ? , qui milite pour l'integration des arts dans l'architecture, il collabore avec des architectes aussi renommes que Maurice Novarina, les freres Arsene-Henry, Michel Herbert, Robert Auzelle, Henry Pottier, Pierre Dufau ou Daniel Badani. Ses oeuvres (sculptures, murs et espaces sculptes, claustras, portes) insufflent par leur expressivite et leur monumentalite du lyrisme et du caractere aux constructions modernes (immeubles de bureaux et d'habitation, universites, mairies, sieges d'entreprise, eglises). Dans les annees 1980, Pierre Sabatier surprend en realisant pour des parcs d'attractions des decors fantastiques en beton projete dans la tradition des grotesques et de l'architecture imaginaire. Il continue egalement a s'exprimer a travers le metal dans de vastes programmes de construction, a la Defense notamment, en collaboration avec les architectes Jean-Paul Viguier, Berthet-Pochy ou Franck Hammoutene. Pierre Sabatier a produit en France et a l'etranger une oeuvre abondante. Il a recu en 1974 la medaille de bronze des arts plastiques de leAcademie dearchitecture, en 1976 la medaille deargent, puis a ete nomme chevalier de la Legion dehonneur en 2002. ‎'Believe in the future and work for it'? The oeuvre of Gustave Serrurier, more than fifty years before Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, blazed the trail to contemporary design. Gustave Serrurier, known as Serrurier-Bovy, was born in Liege in 1858 and died in the same city in 1910. He was one of most original figures in the Belgian avant-garde and the international art revival which characterised the decorative arts and architecture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Initially destined for architecture, he switched to the design and manufacture of furniture and decors, taking over the home decoration store run by his wife, Marie Bovy. He shook free of Art Nouveau aesthetics and the return to craftsmanship advocated by the Arts and Crafts movement to design furniture for the masses with a rational aesthetic, stripped of all superfluous ornament, which heralded the modern home. This richly illustrated book is the fruit of fifteen years of research by the owners of the Chateau of La Cheyrelle, remodelled by Gustave Serrurier. It traces the life of the architect-designer and looks at all the facets of his oeuvre from his avant-garde thinking to his main furniture and architectural designs.
