Industrial-style furniture is in fashion bistro tables and chairs, lockers, mail sorting racks and jointed lamps are all common elements in todays interior design. In this book, Brigitte Durieux, an authority on the style, tells us the story behind fifty European and American objects that have made the surprising transition from factories to our livings rooms and become cult furniture. Featuring more than 250 images, Industrial Chic is a beautifully illustrated showcase that reveals the incredible reach, versatility and long-lasting appeal of industrial design. The remarkable histories of these distinguished objects including the Gras lamp, the Singer stool, the Holophane reflector, the Brillie clock and more accompany brilliant photographs by Laziz Hamani.

This publication on Flemish painting deals with those elements of the social and intellectual context which played a role in the realisation of any work of art, the concrete steps taken within a workshop in preparing for the production of the work, and the production through to completion of the draft. Part One,Concept, deals with those elements of the social and intellectual context which played a role in the realisation of any work of art. This section therefore examines individual motivations and the intellectual background of artists and their patrons, as also their institutional context and working conditions. Part Two,Design, examines the concrete steps taken within a workshop in preparing for the production of a work of art. These include the use of study materials, such as collections of exempla, as well as the stages of work required to make exploratory sketches, the finished draft and thence its transfer to the definitive medium to be used. Part Three,Execution, focuses on the production through to completion of the draft on its support medium. This may be done by the artist himself, or through one or other method of sharing the work, such as the employing of assistants or specialists. Introduction by Frans Baudouin. I. CONCEPT Carl Van de Velde, Status quaestionis; Elisabeth McGrath, Personifying new ideas: the influence of books and humanism on the invention of allegorical figures; Fiona Healy, The satus of mythological painting in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Flanders; Jeffrey Muller, The use of art by confraternities in the St.Jacob's church, Antwerp; Christine Van Mulders, Peter Paul Rubens en Jan Breughel I: de drijfveren van hun samenwerking. This challenging treatise on African elephants and the ivory trade remains an important and groundbreaking work in its field. Foremost authority on the world's ivory trade, a leading expert on the management of elephants, a former game warden, farmer and hunter, Ian Parker draws on 25 years of field experience in Africa to illuminate the key issues behind conservation today. His conclusions are startling. The traditional villains -- the poachers and the ivory traders -- are not as responsible for the plight of elephants in many African countries as is generally alleged. The fault lies much more with the governments of those countries where game laws are outdated and corruption is commonplace, and with the international conservation bodies which, inept and insufficient as they often are, have much to answer for, no matter how good the cause they are serving. Ian Parker's message is both carefully considered and deeply disturbing. If there is an ivory crisis (and even the pessimists admit that there are over a million elephants in Africa today), it is the activities of the conservationists themselves which constitute the main danger to the survival of the African elephant.

Joe Colombo (Milan, 1930-1971) was one of the greatest designers of the last century, visionary and ingenious, capable of giving shape to ideas that retain a striking relevance to this day. Trained first at the Brera Academy and then at the Polytechnic of Milan, Joe Colombo has expressed, in just twenty years of work, an absolutely innovative world view, which placing man and his life at the center of reflection, imagined a dynamic and transformable habitat both on a domestic and urban scale. A design in the round, aimed at satisfying every need - also thanks to technology and new materials - and to shape the space and its objects according to the different activities of the moment, be they working or social interactions. From here, the modular and dynamic furnishing accessories with futuristic lines, among which some pieces that have become iconic of Italian design stand out such as the Tube Chair, the Spider lamp (Compasso d'Oro 1967) or the Boby trolley (now at the MoMA in New York), the "monoblocks", such as the Mini-Kitchen or the Total Table with integrated dishes, up to the global housing unit, a visionary "machine", which encompasses all the needs of living. This volume constitutes the first catalog raisonn of his work, of which about 180 projects are documented, divided between works still in production and historical works; introduced by the essays by Ignazia Favata - his historical collaborator - and Domitilla Dardi, it is completed by a critical anthology.
