‎Pendant sept decennies, Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) a contribue a faconner le monde de ses inventions, laissant derriere elle un sillage d'images, d'objets, de lieux et d'edifices, autant de registres d'une oeuvre qui apparait desormais dans toute son ampleur. Ce premier volume de l'oeuvre complete offre une analyse detaillee de ses premieres annees de creation, tres fertiles, aussi bien dans le domaine du design que de l'architecture ou de la photographie. S'appuyant en grande partie sur les archives conservees par la famille de l'artiste dans son atelier parisien, il permet de faire la lumiere sur ses sources, son environnement, ses annees d'apprentissage a l'ecole de l'Union centrale des arts decoratifs, ainsi que sa rencontre et son association avec Pierre Jeanneret et Le Corbusier, en 1928, qui va donner naissance a des meubles emblematiques tels que la Chaise longue basculante (1928), et a ses premiers amenagements (la villa Savoye, la villa Church, la villa Martinez de Hoz). Il nous fait egalement decouvrir son engagement militant, qui l'amene a voyager a Moscou, puis a reflechir a une architecture vernaculaire au service du peuple, qui aboutira notamment, dans les annees 30, a la Maison au bord de l'eau (1934), a un centre de vacances (1935), ou encore a ses premieres architectures de montagne. Les annees 30 sont par ailleurs celles de la creation de l'UAM, dont elleest l'un des membres fondateurs aux cotes de Robert Mallet-Stevens, mais aussi de sa rupture ideologique avec Le Corbusier, qui va l'amener, a l'oree de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, a faire cavalier seul.‎

‎Ce deuxieme volume de l'oeuvre complete de Charlotte Perriand retrace des periodes particulierement importantes de son oeuvre: ses deux sejours au Japon en 1940-1941 et 1953-1955, et ses realisations pour la Reconstruction, marquees par sa collaboration avec les Ateliers Jean Prouve et de grands architectes de l'epoque : Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Paul Nelson, Jean de Mally, Kenzo Tange etc. Bien au-dela de son role de conseiller pour le gouvernement japonais, Charlotte Perriand recolte en 1941 une riche documentation photographique sur tous les aspects du Japon traditionnel pour les publier dans des journaux apres la guerre. On retrouve dans cet ouvrage plus d'une centaine de ces photographies sur l'histoire de l'art du Japon, publiees pour la premiere fois. Autre etape capitale dans son oeuvre : la convention de collaboration que Charlotte Perriand signe avec les Ateliers Jean Prouve en 1952.
