First edition of a fundamental work in Meteorology in which Saussure describes how to construct a hygrometer from human hair that can measure the relative humidity, and discussing the principles behind it. Cuvier regarded this book as one of the greatest contributions to science of the eighteenth century.""A milestone work in chemistry, physics, and meteorology, which established hygrometry as an exact science. Primarely a geologist who explored and published on the Alps, Saussure (1740-1788) was the first to prove that air expands and becomes less dense the more humidity it contains. First appearance of a classic paper in the theory of sound (his second paper on Acoustics). Saveur had his first founding paper printed in 1701 ""Systeme général des Intervalles des Sons, & son Application à tous les Systèmes & à tous les Instrumens de Musique."" in which he developed the new subject ""acoustique"" (and coined the term), In the paper offered he was the first to use beasts to determine the frequency difference and he was thus able to calculate the absolute frequencies.""To determine absolute frequency, Sauveur used a pair of organ pipes a small half-tone apart in just intonation (frequency ratio 25:24). This interval is sufficiently small that the beats can be counted, for low pitches. Furthermore, the interval can be obtained accurately by tuning through thirds and perfect fifths (for example, by tuning up two major thirds and then down a fifth). As a results of experiments done with Deslander, and organ builder, Sauveur found that the frequency of an organ pipe five Paris feet long was between 100 and 102 cps. Sauveur claimed to have obtained consistent results from experiments done with other piopes. Newton made a rough check of Sauveurs eresults...""(DSB XII, p. 128).

First appearance of Sauveur's last importent work on the theory of sound.""Later, in work presented in 1713 (the paper offered), Sauveur derived the frequency of a string theoretically. He treated the string, stretched horizontally and hanging in a curve because of the gravitational field, as a compound pendulum and he found the frequency of the swinging motion, assumed to have small amplitude. His results agrees with the modern one except for a factor of the quadratic root of 10/phi....... It was through Sauveur and the Paris Academy that ideas about harmonics became well known in the early eighteenth century. Sauveur's terminology, including ""harmonics"" and ""node"", was adopted and still is current."" (DSB XII, p. 128).

Savart showed that the bridge transmits the string’s vibrations that the plate can be made to vibrate at any frequency" and that the corresponding mode is a modification of an unforced mode. He demonstrated that the sound post also serves to transmit vibrations, and he explained that it therefore should not be placed under a nodal line. Thinking that symmetry and regularity would produce the best tone, Savart built a trapezoidal violin with rectangular sound holes. Summary Eusebius of Caesarea in Palestine, active between the end of the third century and the beginning of the fourth, is the Christian author who has handed down to us, in the form of quotations, the greatest number of Greek philosophical texts. Yet his precise relationship to philosophy has never been the subject of a comprehensive study. This book, which brings together contributions by leading specialists, aims to provide an initial overview. The analyses, covering most of Eusebius' works, starting with the Preparation for the Gospel, show the importance of philosophy in his thought. Beyond the use he makes of philosophers, sometimes to criticise them, sometimes to appropriate their ideas, Eusebius stands out for his fairly good knowledge of philosophy, especially Platonic philosophy, the issues of which he seems to understand well. Although he takes up from his Christian predecessors the idea that Christianity is, as such, a ?philosophy,? this claim sometimes implies a technicality that is revealed not only in the way he quotes and comments on the philosophers, but also in the presence in his work, less visible at first sight, of concepts and methods of exposition that bear witness to a real philosophical culture. At the end of these studies, Eusebius of Caesarea, too often reduced to a ?court theologian? or to the status of ?Father of Ecclesiastical History,? emerges more as the scholar he was, both Greek and Christian, whose work and thought are inseparable from the philosophical context in which they were born. 1910 Antique Double Sided World Map by The Scarborough Company c1910 Grande carte toilée double face pliée sous étui avec itineraires et distances.This map has Europe, Asia, Africa & Australia on one side and North America & South America on the other and was published by the Scarborough Company, London, England, around 1910 (latest copyright date) but was printed in Boston, Mass, USA and was originally priced at 15 shillings (£0.75)- quite a sum at that time - equivalent to about £80 now. It includes principal ocean steamship lines, distances in nautical miles along steamship routes andthe routes shown in red on the map, principal places etc. It measures 39 inches wide by 41 inches high (100 x 104 cm) and is printedon cloth. It's in reasonable condition for its age - a bit of foxing, a couple of other marks and some slight frayingbut no splits or tears- see pictures - they form part of the description.
