‎First appearance of a pioneer paper in statistical calculations of life-expectations., containing THE VERY FIRST APPLICATION OF A DIFFERENCE ENGINE TO MEDICAL STATISTICS.""Farr's preliminary report (the paper offered), describing the use of the Scheutz Engine no. 3 to prepare life tables, was published 5 years before his ""English Life Table"". Farr, a pioneer in the quantitative study of morbidity and mortality, was chief statistician of the General Register Office, Englands central statistical office. Influenced by Babbage, he had long been interested in the use of a calculating machine, such as Babbage's Difference Engine to compute life tables"" see page 854 of the present report, in which Farr refers to his 1843 letter on the subject to the registrar-general. Farr had seen and tested the machine's predecessor, the Scheutz Engine No. 2, when it was on display in London. It was at Farr's recommandation that the British government authorized in 1857 the sum of Pound 1200 for the Scheutz Engine no. 3 to be constructed by the firm Bryan Donkin, a manufacturer of machines for the color printing of bank notes and stamps....Farr's printing report, received by the Royal Society on March 17 of that year, was written while Scheutz Engine no. 3 was still ""in the course of construction by Messr. ‎Neglected Barbarians explores the history and archaeology of little-known and less written about peoples of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Although barbarians in history is a topic of perennial interest, most studies have addressed a small number of groups for which continuous narratives can be constructed, such as the Franks, Goths, and Anglo-Saxons. This volume examines groups less accessible in the literary and archaeological evidence. Scholars from thirteen countries examine the history and archaeology of groups for whom literary evidence is too scant to contribute to current theoretical debates about ethnicity. Ranging from the Baltic and northern Caucasus to Spain and North Africa and over a time period from 300 to 900, the essays address three main themes. Why is a given barbarian group neglected? How much can we know about a group and in what ways can we bring up this information? What sorts of future research are necessary to extend or fill out our understanding? Some papers treat these questions organically. Others use case studies to establish what we know and how we can advance. Drawing on those separate lines of research, the conclusion proposes an alternative reading of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, viewed not from the 'centre' of the privileged but from the 'periphery' of the neglected groups. Neglected Barbarians covers a longer time span than similar studies of this kind, while its frequent use of the newest archaeological evidence has no parallel in any book so far published in any language. ‎First edition. Fechner is noted for the introduction of quantitative methods into psychology (e.g. Fechner's Law). His most importent contribution to statistics is his posthumously published book on the measurements of collectives, his ""Kollektivmasslehre"" from 1897. The main examples he treated are to be found in anthropology, zoology, botany, meteorology and aesthetics.""Fechner's Kollektivmasslehre was of immediate influence on many of his colleagues in Leipzig. The psychologists Gottlob Friedrich Lipps, Wilhelm Wirth and to some extent also Wilhelm Wundt used the new methods in psychophysics. Charles Edward Spearman who obtained his Ph.D. under Wundt extended Fechner's ideas and studied the correlation between magnitudes. The Leipzig astronomer and mathematician Heinrich Bruns (1848-1919) soon gave a general solution to Fechner's problem of a mathematical representation of frequency distributions, the so-called Bruns-series (today called Gram-Charlier series) and tried to unify Fechner's theory of collectives with probability theory. His most illustrious student was Felix Hausdorff who carried this tradition further. (Girlich 1996) Bruns and Hausdorff, however, dropped Fechner's requirement of chance variation of the collective object, thus obscuring any trace of Fechner's indeterminism.""
