First German edition of Cavendish's famous paper in which he calculated the weight of the earth and determined its mass. He also, as the first, observed gravitational motion of minute portions of matter. He estimates the earth's mass to 6,6 x 10 to the potential of 24 kg. The original paper ""Experiments to determine the Density of the Earth"" appeared in Philosophical Transaction, 1798.""Cavendish published five papers between 1784 and 1809...With one exception they were comparatively minor productions....The exception was his determination of the density of the earth or weighing of the world in 1798, by means of John Michell's torsion balance. The apparatus consisted of two lead balls on either end of a suspended beam" these movable balls were attracted by a pair of stationary lead balls. Cavendish calculated the the force of attraction between the balls fro the observed period of oscillation of the balance and deduced the density of the earth from the force. He found it to be 5.48 times that of water. Cavendish was the first to observe gravitational motions induced by comparatively minute portions of ordinary matter...By weighing the world he rendered the law of gravitation complete. The law was no longer a proportionally statement but a quantitatively exact one" this was the most importent addition to the science of gravitation since Newton.""(DSB III, p. 158.).

First appearance of this outstanding contribution to mathematics, announcing his invention and developments of the ALGEBRA OF MATRICES, what is now called the Cayley-Hamilton theorem for square matrices of any order. ""The subject originated in a memoir of 1858 (the paper offered) and grew directly out of simple observations on the way in which the transformations (linear) of the theory of algebraic invariants are combined...a distinctive feature of these rules is that multiplication is not commutative...we get different results according to the order in which we do the multiplication... (it) seems about as far from anything of scientific or practical use as anything could possible be. Yet sixty seven years after Cayley's invented it, HEISENBERG in 1925 recognized in the algebra of matrices exactly the tool which he neede for his revolutionary work in QUANTUM MECHANICS.""(Bell, Men of Mathematics).""It was in connection with the study of invariants under linear transformation that Cayley first introduced matrices to simplify the notation involved. Fitrst appearance of Cayley's famous paper on the Four-Colour-Problem""The four-colour map problem (to prove that on any map only four colours are needed to separate countries) is celebrated in mathematics. It resisted the attempts of able mathematicians for over a century and when it was successfully proved in 1976 the ‘computer proof’ was controversial: it did not allow scrutiny in the conventional way. At the height of his influence in 1878, Arthur Cayley had drawn attention to the problem at a meeting of the London Mathematical Society and it was duly ‘announced’ in print. (the paper offered). He made a short contribution himself and he encouraged the young A. B. Kempe to publish a paper on the subject. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the work of Cayley and Kempe in the late 1870s brought valuable insights..... Francis Galton is revealed as the ‘go-between’ in suggesting Cayley publish his observations in Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society."" The fascination exerted by the works of the illustrious Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the decades following his death in 1569 is matched only by the intense interest they generate today. At the end of the sixteenth century and in the first half of the seventeenth, the most ambitious art collectors fought over the few paintings by the master that were still on the market. This setting was the catalyst for the appearance of copies and pastiches ? and even deliberate forgeries. It was then that the elder son of Pieter Bruegel, known as Pieter Brueghel the Younger (whose name is spelled ?Brueghel? here, conforming to the signature that he adopted during the initial phase of his career) emerged as a legitimate successor, producing astonishingly faithful replicas of his father?s paintings. This was all the more surprising given that they were often made after works that were by then dispersed in diverse and sometimes inaccessible private collections. Operating within the context of a sizeable workshop, Brueghel supplied the market with hundreds of copies of variable quality according to demand. This enterprise merited re-evaluation from a technical point of view: how were such vast numbers of copies produced in practice? This three-volume book explores the intriguing Brueg[H]el phenomenon through the two artists? painting practices. The technical aspects of their works are investigated in a detective-like manner and are strikingly elucidated with a wealth of colour illustrations. The reader will come to understand the accomplished practitioner behind the genius that is Bruegel the Elder and the working procedures of his foremost emulator?s workshop. Furthermore, Brueghel the Younger?s exceptional qualities as a painter are singled out from those of his workshop production. The book also reveals fresh discoveries on the father?s creative process through the study of his son?s copies.
